Medical Laboratory Scientist

Essential Responsibilities:

Adheres to all policies, procedures, and regulations when collecting samples for testing.

Performs testing and analysis of biological samples as requested by the provider and in accordance with all regulatory guidelines.

Performs quality control for all procedures at the required intervals. The QC results are to be verified as reading within acceptable limits and this should be documented. Corrective action and troubleshooting should be done when necessary and also documented correctly.

Communicates quickly and clearly to providers or nurses any critical values or markedly unusual test results.

Communicates clearly at shift change to the next lab technician on shift in the department.

Exhibits good working knowledge and logic in troubleshooting and repairing instruments. Assists in maintaining instruments and documents repairs as required. Additionally, reports instrument down time to an MLS and/or Section Supervisor. If one is not available or on site it is reported to the House Supervisor.

Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

Must be detail oriented and proficient with computer and software use.

Ensures the use of AIDET with each patient interaction.

Act in accordance with the established mission, vision, and values.

Abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).

Maintain effective communication and professional working relationships with patients/clients and their representatives, team members, contractors, physicians, peers, outside agencies, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a biological or chemical science with clinical laboratory training.

Eligible to perform high complexity testing.

Required License/Certifications/Registrations

ASCP, AAB, or AMT certified

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science

One-year relevant experience or completed clinical practicums at HRMC.

Preferred License/Certifications/Registrations

none

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher level supervisors, such as a manager or director.

May act as a lead or higher-level supervisor to phlebotomists, MLT’s, or peer MLS’s with less experience in laboratory medicine.

Light Work: Occasionally exerting up to 25 lbs - frequently exerting up to 10 lbs. 11-25% of the day may be standing or walking.
