ABOUT THE RETREAT AT ANNANDALE

The Retreat at Annandale is a faith-integrated, trauma-informed retreat and recovery center serving those who carry the weight of caring for others — pastors and ministry leaders, doctors and nurses, social workers, Child Protective Services teams, first responders, and missionaries. These are the people who answer the late-night calls, who walk into trauma and still speak gently, and who rarely have a place to recover themselves. Our work exists to change that.

This work is not new. Our Executive Director, Jeremy McQuown, has spent more than fifteen years developing and leading trauma-informed recovery care for frontline caregivers and ministry leaders. The Retreat at Annandale is the expansion of that established, proven work into a permanent home: a purpose-built recovery center on a Texas Hill Country ranch stewarded since 1889.

We are currently in the middle of the Built for Renewal Campaign — a capital campaign to design, permit, and build a 20-bed retreat facility — while simultaneously launching our first full season of retreats. That means a great deal of meaningful content is being created right now, and it needs a consistent, beautiful, trustworthy visual voice.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a designer who can take content we have already written and make it look like it belongs to one organization with one voice.

You will not be responsible for generating content, strategy, or messaging. We write the words. Your work is to shape how those words are seen — building the templates, layouts, and graphics that carry our brand consistently across every channel, so that a donor, a pastor, and a hospital administrator all recognize us instantly.

This is a design and systems role. The ideal person is someone who enjoys creating reusable templates rather than one-off pieces, who has a strong eye for restraint and white space, and who understands that our audience is often exhausted — our materials should feel calm, warm, and safe, never loud or cluttered.

WHAT YOU WILL CREATE

Social media

  • Branded post and story templates for Instagram and Facebook
  • Graphics for individual retreats, batched by retreat and scheduled ahead
  • Quote cards, testimonial layouts, campaign milestone graphics, and event announcements

Email

  • Newsletter and marketing email templates with consistent header, footer, and section styling, not always the same, but consistent with brand.
  • Email header graphics, banners, and inline images
  • Donor and campaign email layouts that carry the same visual identity as our print materials

Website

  • On-brand graphics and imagery for retreat listing pages and blog articles, revamp website!
  • Consistent image sizing, cropping, and treatment across the site

Print and downloadable materials

  • Flyers, one-pagers, retreat information sheets, and event invitations
  • Print-ready files prepared correctly for professional printing

Brand consistency

  • A simple, usable brand guide covering fonts, colors, photo treatment, and logo usage
  • An organized, well-labeled template library our team can work from going forward

WHAT THIS ROLE IS NOT

We want to be clear about scope, because clarity protects everyone's time:

  • You will not be writing copy, blog posts, captions, or email content — we provide all of it
  • You will not be setting marketing strategy or building the content calendar
  • You will not be managing community engagement, comments, or direct messages
  • You will not be responsible for fundraising outcomes or donor relationships

Your work is design and visual consistency. That is the whole job, and doing it well matters enormously to us.

PRIORITIES FOR THE FIRST MONTH

The initial one-month contract is intentionally focused. By the end of it, we would hope to have

  • Work on website…branding, presentation, graphics, layouts, visual appearance
  • A first batch of retreat social graphics, ready to schedule. These already exist, but we want something more on brand and visually appealing
  • Social media post, keeping them on brand and finding way to grow our platform
  • A clean, organized file structure so nothing lives only on one person's desktop

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • Demonstrated graphic design experience with a portfolio we can review
  • Strong proficiency in Canva; comfort with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus
  • Experience building templates and design systems, not just individual pieces
  • A working understanding of social media, email, and print specifications
  • Reliable, timely communication and the ability to meet weekly deadlines independently

Valued

  • Experience designing for nonprofits, ministries, healthcare, or mental health organizations
  • Familiarity with email platforms and content scheduling tools
  • Sensitivity to the subject matter — our audience includes people in genuine distress, and our materials should never feel exploitative, sensational, or clinical
  • Comfort working within an explicitly faith-integrated organization

HOW WE WILL WORK TOGETHER

Weekly check-in. One scheduled video call each week to review submitted work, confirm what is needed for the coming week, and keep communication open in both directions. You should never be guessing about priorities.

Content provided in advance. All written content, retreat details, and photography are supplied by our team ahead of each week's design work.

Flexible hours. Approximately eight hours per week, structured however works best for you — two hours daily, two half-days, or one longer block — as long as agreed deliverables arrive on schedule.

COMPENSATION AND TERMS

  • $25.00 per hour, at approximately 8 hours per week
  • One-month initial contract, so both parties can confirm the fit and direction
  • Following a successful first month, we welcome a conversation about a longer contract
  • This is an independent contractor position (1099); the contractor is responsible for their own taxes and equipment
  • All work produced under this contract is the property of The Retreat at Annandale

HOW TO APPLY

Please send the following to jeremy@retreatatannandale.com:

  • A brief note about your interest in this work and why it appeals to you
  • A portfolio or samples, with particular attention to any template or brand system work
  • Your general availability and preferred weekly schedule
