A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing patient specimens to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing and monitoring medical conditions. The MLT performs laboratory testing accurately and efficiently while following established procedures, quality standards, and safety protocols.

What you'll do

Collect, receive, identify, and properly label patient specimensPrepare blood, urine, tissue, and other specimens for laboratory testingPerform routine laboratory tests according to established proceduresOperate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentsPerform testing in areas such as hematology, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and immunology, as applicableReview test results for accuracy and identify abnormal or questionable findingsFollow quality-control procedures and laboratory standardsDocument test results and maintain accurate laboratory recordsReport critical or abnormal results promptly according to facility policyFollow proper specimen-handling, infection-control, and biohazard proceduresMaintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environmentTroubleshoot basic equipment or testing issues and report problems appropriatelyMaintain patient confidentiality and protect sensitive health informationCommunicate effectively with nurses, physicians, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionalsFollow facility policies, laboratory procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements

Hospitals, Clinical Laboratories, Medical Centers, Skilled Nursing Facilities, Outpatient Laboratories, Physician Offices, Diagnostic Centers, Blood Banks, and other healthcare laboratory settings.

Required qualifications

MLT certification or licensure as required by the applicable stateCompletion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician programStrong attention to detail and accuracyKnowledge of laboratory testing procedures, specimen handling, and safety protocolsAbility to operate laboratory equipment and follow established proceduresStrong communication, organizational, and critical-thinking skillsAbility to maintain patient confidentiality and professional standards

Nice to have

ASCP or other nationally recognized MLT certificationPrevious hospital or clinical laboratory experienceExperience with electronic laboratory information systems (LIS)Experience with phlebotomy and specimen collectionFamiliarity with quality-control and regulatory standardsExperience working in high-volume laboratory environments
