Mechanical Designer Intern
Mechanical Designer Intern – Job Posting
Harley-Davidson Motor Company is excited to offer a Mechanical Designer Intern position at the Willie G. Davidson Product Development Center (PDC). This opportunity allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges in a collaborative product development environment.
The PDC brings together Engineering, Styling, and Developmental Purchasing teams in a centralized, 370,000-square-foot facility dedicated to enhancing the product development process. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers and designers supporting new product development, testing, and validation activities.
In this role, the Mechanical Designer Intern will focus on laser scanning physical components to generate point cloud data, performing CAD-to-scan comparisons, and supporting measurement analysis and reverse engineering efforts. Students will contribute to meaningful projects while gaining exposure to advanced digital engineering tools and processes, as well as building relationships with cross-functional teams and leadership.
Outcomes
At the conclusion of the internship, the student will be able to:
- Apply laser scanning techniques to capture accurate 3D data of physical components
- Process and interpret point cloud data for engineering analysis
- Perform CAD-to-point cloud comparisons to evaluate dimensional variation and design intent
- Support reverse engineering activities to recreate or update digital models from scanned data
- Demonstrate understanding of Harley-Davidson’s Product Development Process and the Designer’s role within it
- Utilize engineering tools and methodologies such as Creo Parametric (CAD Application), Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
Duration
The internship lasts one calendar year. Students typically work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer and part-time (15–20 hours per week) during the academic semesters.
Education Required
Actively pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Design Technology or a related technical field; entering the third semester of the program.
Experience Required
- Strong academic performance; cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred
- Interest or coursework in 3D scanning, CAD modeling, or metrology preferred
- Ability to adapt to varying work environments and project needs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
