Starting Salary: $66,000 + depending on experience

The Physical Education Department seeks to hire an assistant professor for their teacher education program.

The Department has over 800 undergraduate students and over 50 graduate students working towards initial and professional teacher certification. Department faculty are dedicated teachers, productive scholars, and engaged members of both the campus and professional community with strong pedagogical backgrounds.

The successful candidate will join a large and dynamic Physical Education program with a long history of training physical education teachers, working with school partners, and serving families and children in the community. We have concentrations in adapted physical activity and outdoor education. You can learn more about the department on our website here.

Major Responsibilities:
Teaching:

  • Provide instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels for Physical Education Teacher Education. The teaching assignment will depend on the department needs, expertise, and experience of the faculty.
  • Majority of teaching is in-person with limited online teaching opportunities primarily at the graduate level.
  • Advise undergraduate physical education majors.

Scholarship/Research:

  • Engage in scholarly work and activities as appropriate to the application and receipt of continuing appointment (tenure) and promotion at SUNY Cortland.

Service:

  • Provide service to the Physical Education Department, the School of Professional Studies, The SUNY Cortland campus community and/or the State University of New York at Cortland and the profession.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate degree or ABD with expected completion date within one year of appointment; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in physical education or related field; and, college or K–12 teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Certified to teach in K-12 schools, experience working with diverse populations; expertise in physical education pedagogy; and, expertise in an additional area such as: motor development, effective instruction, statistics and assessment, fitness programming, technology in PE, elementary/secondary physical education, adapted physical education or curricular design in physical education.

  • Ability to teach undergraduate students in a hands-on, production-oriented curriculum.
