Children's Program Assistant

The Fairmount Community Library has an opening for a part-time Children’s Program Assistant in Syracuse to work 12-18 hours per week with the possibility of more hours on occasion.

Fixed shifts:

Some weekday mornings 9am - 12pm

One Saturday each month from 9:30-2 and one evening per month from 3-7pm

Job Description:

The primary responsibility of this position is planning and executing weekly children’s programs as well as assisting library patrons. Being on the program planning team is very rewarding and fun and you will assist in developing programs that patrons love. Our team strives to create an inviting community atmosphere at FCL. We are seeking dynamic individuals to join our team that are innovative and collaborative.

Requirements include excellent customer services skills and the ability to perform duties effectively. This position is supervised by the Library Director. All successful candidates will receive on-the-job training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent patron services skills and a commitment to serving our community
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
  • Ability to positively relate to and collaborate with community groups, library patrons, and other library staff members
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning
  • History of regular and predictable attendance and punctuality
  • Strong technology skills preferred
  • May be required to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • May be required to lift, pull, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends

Qualifications

  • Relevant Associates or Bachelor Degree coursework
  • No previous library experience is necessary
  • Relevant customer service experience preferred
  • Relevant experience working with young children and families
  • Must enjoy interacting with adults and children of all ages and walks of life

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute children’s program, including weekly preschool storytimes
  • Assist the Youth Services team with carrying out the regular program calendar at the library.
  • Greet and assist patrons at the circulation desk employing effective customer service skills.
  • Perform all circulation desk functions effectively.
  • Comfort with using technology.
  • Ability to represent the Library in a professional manner
  • Perform library opening and closing procedures as assigned.
  • Inform patrons of library policies, enforcing when appropriate.
  • Participate in workshops, seminars, and classes to improve job skills as needed.

Duties:

  • Check in, check out, and renew library materials.
  • Inform patrons of the status of their library records.
  • Process applications and issue new library cards.
  • Assist library patrons with use of copier, fax machine, and computers.
  • Shelve library materials. Shelf-read and organize materials.
  • Use the circulation modules of the library’s automated library system.
  • Other duties as assigned including community outreach or staffing special events at The Library.
