Automotive Mechanic (Assessment)

To take the Automobile Mechanic Assessment (EX-5472), you will need to meet at least one of the qualification paths below:

  • State Experience + Education: 1 year as an Automobile Mechanic Trainee, Range C, plus 18 semester units in automotive mechanics. OR
  • State Experience: 4 years as a California state Mechanic’s Helper, including at least 1 year repairing major automotive components. OR
  • Apprenticeship: Completion of a recognized Automobile Mechanic apprenticeship. If you are within 6 months of finishing, you may still apply to take the exam. OR
  • Professional Experience: 3 years diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and maintaining engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, and other major components of cars and trucks. Qualifying automotive coursework may count toward up to 1 year of experience.

Driver’s License Requirement

A Class III California driver’s license is required before appointment. Don't have it yet? You can still apply to take the assessment, but you will need to obtain the license before appointment.
