Residential Architectural Designer

McMillan Builders is seeking a motivated Residential Architectural Designer to join our residential design-build team. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the design and construction of custom homes, renovations, and additions while working directly with an experienced residential builder.

The ideal candidate is passionate about residential architecture and interested in understanding how thoughtful design translates into real-world construction. This position will assist with the development of residential designs and construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD and will have the opportunity to be involved throughout the design-build process.

Responsibilities

• Develop residential design concepts, plans, elevations, and construction drawings.
• Produce and revise drawings using Revit and AutoCAD.
• Assist with space planning, exterior elevations, floor plans, and residential design details.
• Prepare construction documents and drawing packages for custom homes, renovations, additions, and other residential projects.
• Make revisions and updates based on project requirements, client feedback, and construction needs.
• Coordinate drawings and design information with the McMillan Builders team and outside design professionals as needed.
• Assist with selecting and documenting materials, finishes, and architectural details when applicable.
• Visit active job sites to gain an understanding of construction methods and ensure drawings are coordinated with field conditions.
• Work closely with the builder and project team to understand how design decisions affect constructability, materials, scheduling, and the overall building process.
• Help maintain organized project files, drawings, and design documentation.

Qualifications

• Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Interior Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD required.
• Must have access to a personal computer capable of running Revit and AutoCAD and maintain the required software for use in this position.
• Strong interest in residential architecture, custom homes, and the construction process.
• Ability to read, understand, and develop architectural and construction drawings.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to accept feedback, make revisions, and work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn.
• Experience with SketchUp, rendering software, or other architectural design programs is a plus but not required.
• Must be able to visit residential construction sites in the Lake Norman and surrounding area.
