Position Summary
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides occupational therapy treatments under the direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist. The COTA helps patients restore function, improve daily living skills, maximize independence, and enhance overall quality of life according to individualized treatment plans.
This role also supports departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Treatment
- Deliver occupational therapy treatments established by the Occupational Therapist.
- Implement individualized treatment plans using evidence-based therapeutic techniques.
- Educate patients and families on exercises, adaptive strategies, and home programs.
- Communicate effectively with patients, caregivers, and healthcare team members.
- Utilize rehabilitation equipment and therapeutic modalities to optimize outcomes.
- Collaborate with therapists, physicians, nursing staff, and other disciplines to coordinate care.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete all documentation accurately and within required timeframes.
- Maintain records supporting treatment progress, outcomes, and billing requirements.
- Adhere to regulatory, payer, and departmental documentation standards.
- Ensure compliance with licensure, accreditation, and organizational policies.
Team & Department Support
- Participate in department meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and special projects.
- Assist with program development and process improvement activities.
- Serve as a resource to rehabilitation staff, students, and clinical team members.
- Demonstrate flexibility in managing patient caseloads and department needs.
Professional Development
- Maintain clinical competency through continuing education.
- Stay current on occupational therapy best practices and industry trends.
- Support staff education through knowledge sharing and in-service presentations.
Qualifications
Required
- Associate Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
- Current Indiana Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) License.
- Current BLS/CPR Certification.
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred
- Previous rehabilitation, inpatient, acute care, or hospital-based experience.
- Experience working with diverse patient populations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to safely assist with patient transfers and mobility activities.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds independently and more with assistance.
- Ability to push equipment and wheelchairs as needed.
- Ability to perform CPR and other essential clinical duties.
