The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies is seeking a motivated, dependable, and customer service-oriented student to join our team as a Student Office Assistant. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable professional experience in a collaborative academic environment while supporting the daily operations of the department.
Student workers serve as ambassadors for the department by providing exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and campus visitors. This role offers hands-on experience in higher education administration, office operations, event support, and departmental communications.
Primary Responsibilities
- Welcome and assist students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors in a professional and friendly manner.
- Answer and direct incoming phone calls and respond to general departmental inquiries.
- Provide front office support, including filing, copying, scanning, data entry, and organizing office materials.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing departmental events, including student engagement activities, alumni events, and special programs.
- Support departmental projects and administrative initiatives as assigned.
- Help prepare event materials, set up and break down events, and assist with event logistics.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming office environment.
- Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
Must be available to work 10 hours a week minimum!
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Dependable, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks.
- Open to undergraduate students; all majors welcome
- Available to work 10–12 hours per week during business hours
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs and help with event setup
- Attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with Canva or social media is a plus.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Pay & Employment Information
- Position Type: Federal Work-Study Student Employee
- Pay Rate: $15.00 per hour (depending on your Federal Work-Study award)
- Hours: Up to 20 hours per week, depending on your Federal Work-Study award, departmental needs, and class schedule.
- Eligibility: Applicants must have an active Federal Work-Study award through Texas State University's Financial Aid Office to be considered for this position.
- Schedule: Flexible work hours are arranged around your class schedule during normal departmental business hours.
- Some additional shifts outside of normal office hours for special events will also be available, especially on Fridays.

Performance Evaluations & Feedback
Student employees will receive a formal evaluation at the end of each semester, conducted by their direct supervisor. Evaluations will reflect performance, reliability, and growth in career readiness competencies such as professionalism, teamwork, and communication.
Through this role, students will gain hands-on experience in event planning and customer service, while strengthening competencies such as leadership, professionalism, and teamwork while making a meaningful contribution to the success of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and its students.
Supervisor: Michelle Cousin, Administrative Assistant II, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. Michelle will serve as the direct supervisor for this position, providing ongoing support, training, and regular performance evaluations.
