Company Overview
The Phase One Group (http://thephaseonegroup.com) is a Southern California environmental consulting firm specializing in Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) reports for commercial real estate transactions throughout Southern California.
We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Cal Poly Pomona student to assist with environmental research, report preparation, project coordination, and administrative assignments. This is a remote, work-from-home position offering practical experience in environmental consulting, commercial real estate due diligence, technical writing, and project management.
Training, written procedures, and report templates will be provided.
Position Summary
The Environmental Consultant Assistant will provide support on individual Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) projects as assignments become available. Work will be offered on an as-needed, project-by-project basis. The number and frequency of assignments will depend on the company's workload, and no minimum number of projects or weekly hours is guaranteed.
Before accepting an assignment, the student will receive a description of the required work, project deadline, and lump-sum compensation. Once an assignment is accepted, the student will be expected to complete it accurately and by the agreed-upon deadline.
All work will be completed under the direction and review of the company owner. The student will not make final environmental conclusions, identify Recognized Environmental Conditions, or sign reports.
Primary Responsibilities
Depending on the assigned project, responsibilities may include:
- Conducting online research concerning the subject property and surrounding area.
- Reviewing environmental database reports, historical maps, aerial photographs, city directories, regulatory records, and other property information.
- Requesting available records from fire departments, building departments, environmental agencies, and other government offices.
- Preparing and submitting environmental questionnaires to property owners, occupants, property managers, and other appropriate contacts.
- Following up on outstanding questionnaires, records requests, and project documents.
- Contacting property representatives to coordinate site-inspection dates, times, and access arrangements.
- Preparing preliminary drafts of assigned Phase I ESA report sections using company templates.
- Entering property, historical, regulatory, and project information into reports.
- Organizing photographs, correspondence, regulatory records, and supporting documentation in electronic project folders.
- Proofreading reports for spelling, grammar, formatting, consistency, and completeness.
- Updating project tracking information and notifying the company owner of approaching deadlines.
- Completing related research, writing, document-management, and administrative assignments.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona.
- Strong research, reading-comprehension, and writing skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to follow written procedures and report templates.
- Dependable and capable of completing accepted assignments by established deadlines.
- Comfortable communicating professionally by email and telephone.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, internet research, email, and PDF documents.
- Ability to work independently and provide regular progress updates.
- Access to a personal computer, reliable internet access, telephone service, and a suitable home workspace.
- Ability to protect confidential client and property information.
Students studying environmental science, geology, geography, urban and regional planning, civil engineering, technical writing, English, business administration, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Previous environmental consulting experience is not required.
Work Arrangement
- Fully remote, work-from-home position.
- Assignments are offered as projects become available.
- There are no guaranteed weekly hours or minimum number of assignments.
- The student may review the scope, deadline, and compensation before accepting an assignment.
- Work may generally be completed around the student's academic schedule.
- Some availability during normal business hours may be necessary for telephone calls, records requests, and appointment coordination.
- Time spent completing assignments must be recorded accurately, even when compensation is established on a project basis.
Compensation
Compensation will be established as a lump-sum amount for each accepted project or assignment. The amount will depend on the scope, complexity, anticipated time commitment, and deadline.
Typical project compensation: $200–$400 per project, depending on the assigned responsibilities.
The project rate and required deliverables will be provided in writing before the student accepts each assignment. This is a part-time, non-exempt employee position, and compensation will be administered through the company's payroll system in accordance with applicable California wage-and-hour requirements.
