The role
A Moderate Sedation RN is responsible for safely managing the care of patients undergoing procedures requiring moderate (conscious) sedation. This nurse plays a critical role in procedural settings — assessing patients before sedation, administering medications, monitoring throughout the procedure, and guiding patients safely through recovery.
What you'll do
- Assess and prepare patients before procedures requiring moderate sedation- Review medical history, medications, allergies, and vital signs- Administer sedative and other medications according to physician orders, facility policies, and scope of practice- Continuously monitor blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory status, and level of consciousness- Recognize and respond promptly to changes in the patient's condition or sedation level- Maintain airway safety and assist with emergency interventions when needed- Monitor patients during recovery and ensure they meet discharge criteria- Maintain accurate documentation of medications, vital signs, assessments, and patient responses- Educate patients and families regarding the procedure, sedation, and recovery instructions- Follow infection-control, medication-safety, and patient-safety protocols- Collaborate with physicians, procedural staff, anesthesia personnel, and other members of the healthcare team
Typical work settings
Interventional Radiology, GI/Endoscopy, Cardiac Catheterization Labs, Pain Management, Radiology, and other procedural areas.
Required qualifications
- Active RN license in the applicable state- BLS certification- Strong assessment, monitoring, and critical-thinking skills- Knowledge of airway management, emergency response, and medication safety
Nice to have
- ACLS certification- Moderate sedation experience- Experience in procedural or critical-care settings
