General Description

The Watertown Public Schools welcomes individuals who are willing to contribute to the successful educational experiences of the children of Watertown.

Substitute teachers play an important role in maintaining continuity of instruction when a classroom teacher is absent. Substitute teachers must possess excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; be professional in demeanor and appearance; and be punctual, reliable, organized, and flexible.

Your presence helps ensure that students continue to learn, feel supported, and have a positive school experience even when their regular teacher is away.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher in accordance with the district's philosophy, goals, and objectives.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes and/or perform assigned duties at designated locations and times.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School Committee policies.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • GED/High School Diploma and two years of post-high school education
  • Previous experience working with children or young adults in educational, recreational, counseling, or other supportive roles
  • Successful completion of the Sub Skills Basic Training Course through STEDI.org with a minimum 85% average. WPS will pay for this course for qualified applicants who do not have classroom experience.
  • Successful completion of CORI, SORI, and national fingerprinting (CHRI) background screenings

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching and child development
  • One or more years of K–12 classroom, substitute, instructional assistant, or practicum/internship experience
  • Education degree or Massachusetts teacher licensure
  • Experience working with children and/or young adults
  • Multilingual skills

Per Diem Rates

  • Non-Certified Substitute Teacher: $139/day
  • Substitute Teacher with a valid MA DESE License: $149/day
  • Certified Retired Teacher from Watertown Public Schools: $159/day
