Freelance Junior/Intermediate Interior Designer

Small Interior Design Firm | Residential Projects

We are a small, established interior design firm seeking an experienced Freelance Interior Designer  to join our team on a project-by-project basis.

The ideal candidate is a highly organized, detail-oriented designer who can confidently manage multiple aspects of an interior design project—from concept and documentation through procurement, installation, and completion. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable developing creative design solutions and keeping the many details of a project organized and moving forward.

Our projects include high-end residential and commercial interiors, and the successful candidate should have a strong understanding of both design and the practical requirements of executing a project.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and execution of interior design concepts for residential and commercial projects
  • Prepare and coordinate floor plans, furniture plans, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, finish plans, and design details
  • Develop furniture, lighting, material, finish, and accessory selections
  • Research and source furniture, lighting, fabrics, finishes, artwork, accessories, and other interior products
  • Prepare FF&E schedules, specifications, budgets, proposals, and purchasing documentation
  • Obtain and review vendor quotes, pricing, lead times, and product information
  • Coordinate with architects, contractors, vendors, manufacturers, workrooms, and other consultants
  • Track orders, approvals, deliveries, backorders, damages, and replacements
  • Maintain accurate project files, schedules, specifications, and correspondence
  • Assist with project budgeting and monitor project costs
  • Coordinate installations and assist with punch lists and project close-out
  • Communicate professionally with clients, vendors, contractors, and consultants
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Anticipate potential issues and proactively communicate solutions

Required Software Skills

Candidates should be highly proficient in the software and digital tools commonly used in professional interior design, including:

  • AutoCAD – strong proficiency required
  • Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat
  • Microsoft Excel – strong proficiency for budgets, schedules, FF&E tracking, and project documentation
  • Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Experience with SketchUp and/or other 3D modeling and visualization software is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Revit is a plus
  • Experience with interior design-specific project management, specification, or procurement software is a plus
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software and digital systems

Qualifications & Experience

  • 3+ years of professional interior design experience, preferably with  residential interiors
  • Demonstrated experience taking projects from design development through installation and completion
  • Strong knowledge of furniture, lighting, materials, finishes, textiles, and interior products
  • Experience working with vendors, manufacturers, contractors, and trades
  • Strong understanding of FF&E procurement and project coordination
  • Excellent organizational and project-management skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines
  • Professional, collaborative, and solutions-oriented approach
  • Ability to understand and interpret architectural drawings and construction documents

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is creative, organized, resourceful, and dependable—a person who enjoys being involved in all phases of a project and understands that successful interior design requires both creativity and meticulous execution.

Because we are a small firm, the ability to wear multiple hats is essential. You should be comfortable moving between design development, drawings, sourcing, budgets, client communication, vendor coordination, and project management as needed.

The ideal candidate is someone who can work independently with minimal supervision, recognize what needs to be done before being asked, and take ownership of their responsibilities.

Position

Freelance / Contract
Project-based with potential for ongoing work
Flexible schedule with the ability to work remotely, with occasional in-person meetings, site visits, and installations as required.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience and level of expertise.

To apply, please submit your resume, portfolio, hourly rate, and a brief description of your relevant residential and commercial interior design experience.
