Strategic Initiatives Intern

What this Department does: 

The department’s work spans several key areas, including corporate responsibility, internal communications, enterprise strategy, and operations-focused strategic initiatives. By fostering collaboration, leveraging data-driven insights, and championing forward-thinking solutions, the team plays a pivotal role in helping shape the future of Tallgrass. 

Our responsibilities include:

  • Corporate Responsibility Strategy and Reporting: Supporting Tallgrass’ corporate responsibility strategy, including the development of the annual Corporate Responsibility Report, which highlights our progress and future goals.
  • Strategic Advising: Providing guidance to departments across the organization to help integrate corporate responsibility, business strategy, and continuous improvement principles into planning and decision-making.
  • Internal Communications: Supporting communications that inform, engage, and align employees around key company priorities, initiatives, milestones, and cultural efforts.
  • Enterprise Strategy: Assisting with strategic planning, research, analysis, and cross-functional initiatives that support Tallgrass’ long-term growth and organizational effectiveness.
  • Peer Benchmarking and Research: Conducting analyses to compare Tallgrass’ practices and performance with industry peers, identify best practices, and highlight opportunities for improvement.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

You can expect to: 

As an intern reporting directly to the Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a variety of impactful projects and gain hands-on experience in the energy sector. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Annual Corporate Responsibility Report: Play a crucial role in the final stages of creating and publishing our annual corporate responsibility report. This involves tasks such as copy editing, providing design input, validating data, and assisting with communications to ensure a polished and comprehensive report.
  • Peer Benchmarking and Research: Lead efforts in benchmarking our corporate responsibility practices against industry peers. Conduct in-depth research to identify best management practices and innovative approaches that can enhance our CR strategy.
  • Internal Communications: Assist with internal communications projects that help inform and engage employees across the organization. This may include drafting content, preparing presentations, supporting communication plans, and helping align messaging around company priorities and initiatives.
  • Enterprise Strategy: Support strategic planning and enterprise-wide initiatives through research, analysis, presentation development, meeting coordination, and project tracking. This work may involve helping connect cross-functional efforts to broader business priorities.
  • Corporate Responsibility Council: Support the management and coordination of the internal Corporate Responsibility Council. This includes organizing meetings, preparing materials, and facilitating discussions to drive our CR initiatives forward.
  • Strategic Initiatives: Contribute to a variety of internal strategic initiatives that span across different focus areas such as artificial intelligence, company culture, process enhancement, and more. Your involvement will provide you with a broad understanding of how strategic projects are developed and implemented within a leading energy company.

Qualifications

What you will bring: 

To excel in this internship role, candidates should bring a combination of relevant academic background, practical skills, and specific knowledge areas. 

Education:

Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Communications, Public Policy, Engineering, or a related field with an expected graduation date of December 2026-May 2028.

  • Strong academic performance with a desired focus on courses related to corporate responsibility, sustainability, communications, or strategic management.

Experience/Specific Knowledge 

  • Previous internship or work experience in corporate responsibility, sustainability, strategic initiatives, communications, or a related area is preferred but not required. 
  • Experience in project management, research, or data analysis is a plus.
  • Strong ability to analyze data, identify trends, and draw meaningful insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in conducting thorough and accurate research, including benchmarking and best practices analysis.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data visualization tools. Experience with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
  •  Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Understanding of corporate responsibility principles and sustainability practices.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and frameworks related to corporate responsibility reporting (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD).
  • Awareness of current trends and challenges in the energy sector, particularly related to sustainability and innovation.

By bringing these experiences, skills, and knowledge to the role, the intern will be well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to Tallgrass' corporate responsibility and strategic initiatives, while also gaining valuable professional development opportunities.

What else do you need to know:

Our internships are temporary full-time positions, in-person/hybrid at our Lakewood, CO office. We will host our Summer 2027 interns from May-August for 10 weeks. 

Compensation And Other Benefits

  • Pay Range $20.90-$29.61 USD Hourly
  • The final pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, and working location. The total compensation package for this role may also include paid time off, a housing stipend, and more.
