AI and Data Intern
What this Department does:
The AI and Data Solutions team designs, develops, integrates, and supports AI-enabled solutions, internal applications, and related services that help Tallgrass teams work more efficiently. The team builds tools such as internal portals, chatbots, workflow automations, and data-informed AI systems, and applies company AI governance, privacy, and security practices throughout delivery.
Interns work alongside developers and data practitioners on structured, supervised assignments. This role is designed for a student still in school: you will learn established patterns, contribute to real backlog and pilot work, and grow toward more independent delivery with mentoring and review.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
You will be part of the AI and Data Solutions team, working with developers on assigned tasks. We give interns meaningful work on real backlog and pilot initiatives, with the supervision and review expected for a student still in school. You will learn current processes, use published documentation and team patterns, and contribute to tools, tests, and documentation that help the team deliver.
You can expect to:
- Join the AI and Data Solutions team on day-to-day work, using published documentation, team patterns, and mentoring to complete assigned tasks.
- Help prototype and develop AI-enabled internal tools and automations the team has identified as valuable but cannot currently prioritize against production support and committed delivery work.
- Support evaluation, testing, integration, and documentation of AI system workflows, including APIs, model prompts, data inputs, and application components, so senior developers can stay focused on architecture and production releases.
- Contribute to data preparation, quality checks, and simple transformations in collaboration with Data & Analytics so datasets are suitable for AI experiments and pilots.
- Use AI-assisted development tools to help generate code scaffolding, templates, unit-test stubs, and documentation under established guidelines and review.
- Learn introductory retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) concepts - how knowledge sources, prompts, and search support answers - and apply them on assigned exercises under guidance.
- Assist in turning business requests into simple technical notes, flow diagrams, and implementation checklists with supervision.
- Write and run unit or integration tests for assigned components; record findings, steps, and how-to notes in team documentation.
- Apply company AI governance guardrails under direction, including data minimization, PII handling, prompt filtering, content moderation, and privacy and security best practices.
- Collaborate with teammates and stakeholders with tact, courtesy, and professionalism; present your work in clear, non-technical language when asked.
- Complete other assigned projects that support team delivery and your learning. You will not independently own production systems, on-call rotation, or unsupervised releases.
What you will learn:
- How an enterprise AI and Data Solutions team designs, tests, documents, and delivers AI-enabled applications.
- Foundational concepts in large language models (LLMs), generative AI, prompt design, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
- Practical software engineering habits: version control, code review, testing, and technical documentation.
- How data quality, lineage, and responsible data handling affect AI outcomes.
- Company AI governance, privacy, and security expectations for internal tools.
- How Rapid Application Development (RAD) and AI-assisted coding are used to accelerate delivery under established patterns.
- How the broader IT organization works - Applications, Data & Analytics, Infrastructure, and Cyber Security - and how AI solutions fit into that landscape.
- How to communicate technical work to both technical and non-technical partners.
