Summer Mission Trip Intern

General Intern Description:  

All interns' primary responsibility is to create a loving atmosphere among the students, staff, and short-term mission teams while working together with them for the summer. Every intern's general task list over the summer may include serving as a point person for visiting youth groups, leading devotionals and prayer walks, assisting with training and game times, and assisting with picking up and distributing food. You will also have space to explore your unique gifts. In summary, your main goal is to minister to the visiting short-term teams that come in to serve with Urban Impact throughout the summer, with a secondary specific intern role that highlights your unique giftings (outlined below in the specific intern roles job descriptions). 

This internship will teach you how to minister to youth in a missional setting and how to run short-term mission teams. You will also learn what it means to be a missionary in a cross-cultural context, to help others discern God’s calling on their own life, all while discerning the call of God on your own life and how He has uniquely created you to further His Kingdom.  

This internship is a support-raised position and can be used for college internship credit depending on program requirements. Minimum age requirement is a college freshman or older. Free housing and some free meals are provided. We prefer that all interns have a car, but we can work with you if you do not. 

Specific intern roles  

These are roles that we are looking for interns to operate alongside the general intern description. You may find that you fit multiple of these roles or maybe just one. Pray and thoughtfully consider which roles excite you the most and match the way God has gifted you the most. In our interview, we can discuss adjusting or adding anything you feel would be helpful!

Videography and Photography Intern:   

Your responsibility would be to capture the best moments of the mission week on camera (both serious and funny) and incorporate them into two recap videos (a professional video and a fun video). Recap videos are our way of thanking each mission team for the true impact they made on the Kingdom of God that week, as well as reminiscing about the fun moments we had together. Your job is to show our mission teams that we care about this week and their team through the lens of a camera.  

Key qualifications 

Owns and can operate a professional camera  

Has experience composing and editing videos  

Has experience taking photos on a professional camera  

Can handle social media content  

Can make weekly recap videos for mission teams  

Can be on the go and visit multiple places throughout the day  

Has a good sense of humor  

Nurse Intern: 

Your responsibility would be to look after the well-being of the mission team members, especially the ones going to the worksite. Our mission teams help with construction projects throughout the week, so to ensure the safety of our students, you would be the first responder to step in during any emergencies or accidents at the worksite or during the week in general. You will also be a champion for hydration and making sure people are eating enough food.

Key qualifications 

Is a medical student/nursing student, or has strong lifeguarding experience  

Has valid experience treating minor injuries  

Can be calm in chaotic situations  

Handyman/woman Intern: 

Your responsibility would be to assist at the worksite during the mission trip week. Our mission teams help with construction projects throughout the week, so you would essentially support our facilities team by providing insight and direction on the projects, helping mission team members use tools, and keeping the vibes up at the worksite. Construction projects are a crucial part of our mission trips, so we are looking for someone who is willing to lead at those sites with both a heart for the work and the workers.  

Key qualifications 

Has experience with a variety of construction tools  

Is a good communicator  

Can take the lead on projects  

Is flexible and can switch between work sites during the day if needed  

Has a positive attitude and can create conversation  

Preferably owns a pick-up truck for moving large quantities and objects  

Relational Outreach Intern  

Your responsibility would be to assist those leading the outreach block parties and lead mission teams at our Summer Day Camp. Urban Impact has a summer school/camp for kids on Pittsburgh's North Side called Summer Day Camp. Our mission teams come and lead/play games outside with the campers each week, so your job would be to make sure those games run smoothly, step in whenever necessary, lead games, and check in with mission team members. Additionally, we host block parties throughout the summer with the athletics department as a form of outreach at Urban Impact. There are many moving parts to running a block party, so you would be responsible for filling any gaps, helping complete unfinished work, problem-solving, and organizing the mission teams to ensure the event runs efficiently and successfully. Summer Day Camp and block parties are among the most relational parts of the mission trips, so an intern who is passionate and excited about relational ministry is perfect for this job.

Worship Leader and Community Builder Intern  

Your responsibilities would be to make our mission teams feel at home at Urban Impact and to lead worship in the evenings. For many weeks during the summer, we will host more than one church, so your job alongside worship would be to lead games during downtime, build community between the teams, keep an eye out for kids who feel uneasy about the trip, and create a culture of encouragement and fun. We are also the proud owners of an espresso machine that we operate during mission weeks, so barista abilities are preferred. Our mission teams give so much time and energy during the week, and it is a challenging time. To make the week more upbeat, it is important for this intern to have a heart to love each mission team member well.

Administrative and Coordinating Intern  

Your responsibility would be to ensure the mission trip runs smoothly, often working behind the scenes while also ensuring our own team and mission teams are equipped. Your day might look like going to Sam's Club to pick up extra supplies, creating itineraries for mission weeks, organizing data, making sure the dormitory stays clean, creating systems to keep the day running efficiently, solving problems, and filling any gaps as needed. This role is one of our most needed roles for making the mission trip possible.
