Youth Outdoors Assistant Service-Learning Position

Position Description
The Youth Outdoors service-learning internship provides the opportunity for hands-on experience in serving urban youth park guests. The intern will work closely with staff to deliver after school programming to youth in Euclid, Collinwood, and East Cleveland neighborhoods, and other groups as needed. This service-learning intern will help connect urban youth to recreation and nature activities in a fun, fast paced environments, both indoors and outdoors. Activities may include Activities may include hiking, fishing, paddling, and archery among others. This position is a perfect fit for students looking to make a positive impact in the lives of underserved youth. 

Schedule

  • Dates September-December 2026, January-March 2027
  • 6 hours/week Monday - Friday between 10 am - 8 pm
  • Number of available positions: 4
  • Youth Outdoors (Garfield Park Reservation)

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities and activities may include (but not limited to):

  • Working with children between the ages of 8 and 18 years old
  • Assisting with various programs and program preparations 
  • Enforcing and following safety guidelines associated with programs
  • Reporting participant concerns to staff to resolve issues
  • May also assist with animal care, office tasks, and cleaning of supplies/equipment 

Requirements

  • Currently a junior/senior in high school or enrolled in a college/university
  • Interest in environmental interpretation, education, natural resources, wildlife management, or a related field
  • Ability to speak comfortably in front of groups of up to 30 people
  • Willing and able to engage diverse audiences in outdoor education and activities
  • Comfortable lifting at least 25 lbs. 
  • Enjoys working outdoors
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
