Education Fellow / Program Coordinator
About the Case Method Institute
The Case Method Institute (originally the Case Method Project at Harvard Business School) is a small, independent nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, MA, dedicated to improving high school history and civics education in the United States. Under the guidance of Professor David Moss, the Institute works with high school teachers nationwide to bring the singularly effective teaching approach of many leading professional schools—the case method—to U.S. history, government, and civics classrooms, enabling high school students to train for active citizenship in the same way professional school students train for leadership in business and law. The Institute provides teachers with professional development in case method teaching, access to cases and teaching materials originally developed for Professor Moss’s Harvard College course, “History of American Democracy,” and ongoing, personalized support—all free of charge. Rigorous program evaluation indicates highly positive effects on students’ academic performance (including their critical thinking skills and ability to make effective, evidence-based arguments) as well as on their levels of civic interest, knowledge, and engagement. To date, the initiative has partnered with over 3,000 high school teachers who in turn have brought the case method to more than 350,000 students in all 50 states and D.C. The Institute is now significantly expanding operations to scale its reach and impact nationwide and has recently piloted promising new ways of attracting and training large cohorts of teachers.
