Cybersecurity Consulting Intern

POSITION SUMMARY
Cybersecurity Consulting Interns will work alongside Clearwater's consulting teams to gain hands-on, real-world experience within a client-facing cybersecurity advisory practice. The internship offers exposure to a broad range of cybersecurity engagements, regulatory frameworks, and client environments, with a particular emphasis on the healthcare sector.
The role is designed to build foundational consulting skills, technical skills, and exposure to the healthcare sector through structured mentorship, project-based learning, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Successful interns demonstrate curiosity, adaptability, strong communication skills, and the ability to learn quickly while contributing to team and client outcomes. This internship is intended to prepare high-potential students for future full-time opportunities within the firm.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support engagements on active client projects under the direct supervision of consultants and project leads
- Assist with foundational engagement tasks, such as:
- Supporting risk assessments, gap analyses, and vulnerability evaluations
- Gathering evidence, conducting research, and helping document findings against industry frameworks (NIST, ISO 27001, CIS Controls, HIPAA Security Rule, etc.)
- Drafting sections of internal working documents, templates, and summaries for senior review
- Assisting with the preparation of internal presentations and materials
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and scheduled mentorship check-ins
- Apply Clearwater approved AI and generative AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate research and documentation while upholding quality and confidentiality standards
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and attention to detail when engaging with client-related materials
- Complete assigned learning modules, shadowing opportunities, and periodic feedback sessions with an assigned mentor
- Commit to full-time hours for the duration of the Summer 2027 internship period
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate university, with a major in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, or similarly related field of study
- Graduation Date of Summer 2027 or later
- Foundational coursework or classroom exposure to core cybersecurity domains such as risk management, compliance, network security, identity and access management, or security operations
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
- Familiarity with at least one major security framework (e.g., NIST CSF, NIST 800-53, ISO 27001, CIS Controls, or HIPAA Security Rule) gained through coursework or self-study
- Prior internship, co-op, part-time, or project-based experience in cybersecurity, IT, audit, compliance, or a related analytical field
- Exposure to the healthcare industry or familiarity with HIPAA/HITECH requirements, EHR/EMR systems, or healthcare network environments
- Participation in cybersecurity clubs, hackathons, capture-the-flag competitions, open-source security projects, or other cybersecurity related activities outside of the classroom
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, & KNOWLEDGE
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field for the full duration of the internship
- Anticipated graduation date of August 2027 or later; candidates expected to graduate prior should consider applying to our Junior Cybersecurity Consultant role
- Comfort using Clearwater approved AI and generative AI tools to research, draft, and accelerate work, along with sound judgment about when and how to apply them appropriately
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and adjust messaging for different audiences
- High degree of adaptability, curiosity, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced, client-focused environment
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and genuine interest in growing into a cybersecurity consulting career

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXPECTATIONS
- Actively participate in structured mentorship, training, and feedback sessions throughout the internship
- Build foundational knowledge of at least one major security framework (NIST CSF, HIPAA Security Rule, HITRUST CSF, etc.) relevant to healthcare cybersecurity
- Explore certification pathways (e.g., CompTIA Security+, ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC)) as preparation for future career development
- Stay current on evolving threats, regulatory requirements, and security best practices, and develop sound judgment in applying AI tools to accelerate work while balancing efficiency with confidentiality and quality standards
