Head Lifeguard

Concord Recreation is seeking responsible Head Lifeguards for weekday and weekend shifts at our indoor pools. Head Lifeguards manage lifeguard operations, supervises lifeguards on duty, watch pool/waterfront activities, prevent and addresses dangerous situations, and respond to people in need of aid.  Candidates must be team players, flexible, dependable and motivated.  Must possess a current ARC LGT and CPR/AED certification or willing to obtain.  

Additional perks of the job include free membership to the swim and fitness facilities for the length of employment and reduced class fees for employee and their family members.  

Pay range: $22.00 - $30.00 per hour; starting pay based on qualifications. This is a year-round, hourly, part-time position, consisting of up to 20 hours per week.

GENERAL SUMMARY: 

Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Program Manager, manages lifeguard operations, supervises lifeguards on duty, watches pool/waterfront activities, prevents and addresses dangerous situations, and responds to people in need of aid.  Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under their direction and control.  Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures.  Incumbent is called upon to handle a significant amount of details, each varying from the other in substance and content, requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Maintains watchfulness over pools to prevent dangerous situations.  

Monitors and assists swimmers. 

Enforces all pool and facility rules; follows all safety-related procedures.  

Provides basic first aid.  

Performs rescue if appropriate, calls for help, provides emergency care, interviews witnesses, and files reports.  

Maintains a high level of expertise and professionalism.   

Assists in leading mandatory in-service training sessions and staff meetings.   

Maintains proper attire (red lifeguard suit); reports with provided shirt, whistle.   

Remains aware of all fitness and pool related classes and programs run by the Recreation Division in order to.   

Performs basic water testing and light maintenance in and around pools.  

Provides adequate notice if unable to work a scheduled shift; arranges for a substitute lifeguard and obtains approval from Management.   

Arrives on time and is ready to work when each assigned shift begins. 

Performs basic and complex pool mechanics and maintenance including but not limited to backwashing, ordering and adding chemicals, testing for alkalinity/calcium, etc.  

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: 

Assists in supervising lifeguards. 

Provides support to swim instructors and water fitness instructors. 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

Required certification: Current Lifeguarding Certification  

Preferred certification: Water Safety Instructor, Certified Pool Operator 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES 

Working knowledge of multi-pool aquatic facility, procedures and equipment.  Thorough working knowledge of and ability to perform lifesaving techniques, CPR and First Aid. Ability to swim. 

Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public, including children and young adults, in a courteous and tactful manner and to fairly and tactfully enforce facility rules and regulations.  

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Moderate physical effort is generally required which involves frequent lifting of between 30 and 60 pounds.  Additional physical effort is required of Lifeguards in emergency situations; see attached for specific skills involved. Regularly required to stand, walk, crouch, stoop, reach, crawl, climb, talk, sit and hear for extended periods and may be required to swim for extended periods of time. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects or equipment.  May be required to work with caustic chemicals. Noise is moderate to loud at times.  Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.
