Syngenta's Production & Supply Team is seeking an HSE Intern in Greensboro, NC. This internship role will provide a unique opportunity for a senior student focused on a Health, Safety, and Environmental degree program to work alongside and be mentored by the Syngenta North America Regional HSE Team, some of the best in the industry.
The overall purpose of the job is to deliver appropriate complex HSE projects in accordance with internship requirements, while building experience and confidence to potentially expand in the role and act as an assistant HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) advisor/liaison for our Greensboro, North Carolina Crop Protection headquarters. However, that would depend on performance, comfort level, and any applicable agreement with the university internship advisor, as long as it does not impede the completion of required projects for course credit.
In addition, part of this assignment will involve responsibility for assisting with assessing, advising, and auditing various HSE codes for a new office and research & development building project.
As part of Syngenta's Emerging Talent Program, you will gain hands-on experience, exposure to day-to-day business operations, and opportunities to apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges while developing your professional skills.
Accountabilities: (Not all-encompassing, but these are responsibilities with which you would have a high likelihood of being involved.)
- All projects or work activities must be in compliance with federal, state, and local HSE regulations and Syngenta policies and standards in a complex site office, laboratory, and pilot plant operation.
- Assist with training the site spill team.
- Assist with the development, implementation, maintenance, and improvement of a comprehensive HSE program and related management systems for the site.
- Assist with the risk assessment of projects impacting HSE, e.g., management of change (i.e., experiments, process improvements, etc.), construction, and other initiatives.
- Help provide HSE-related guidance and training for all employees, third-party contract employees, trade contractors, and visitors. Drive HSE awareness techniques, such as safety meetings/committees and safety alerts; enhance employee engagement.
- Assist with the site environmental program (hazardous waste, air permit, etc.).
- Assist with IH monitoring for the site, such as respiratory fit testing, flex hood monitoring, and ergonomic assessments.
- Develop, improve, and maintain site HSE intranet information, databases, pertinent records, and other database entries as needed.
- Participate in site incident investigations and assist with HSE communications regarding incident learnings.
- Participate in cross-functional teams, partner with peers, and support all HSE network-wide initiatives.
- Maintain a strong onsite presence through site walkthroughs, inspections, and other HSE activities.
- Assist Regional HSE with project implementation and site audits and assist the site regulatory audit contact.
- Assist with operational aspects of the site security program.
Qualifications
- A student at an ABET-accredited university in the area of Health, Safety, and Environment or a similar technical degree.
- A minimum of one, but preferably two, co-op assignments in HSE during a college career is preferred.
- Experience in construction safety is a plus.
- Experience in a laboratory or research setting is a plus.
- Knowledge of HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) regulations, e.g., OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and DOT.
- Ability to read and interpret HSE legislation, as applicable.
- Ability to organize and learn to eventually conduct a site HSE audit and risk analysis of HSE issues.
- Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, Traits & Abilities
- Ability to identify potential risks and safety issues throughout the site and during design reviews.
- Data analytics experience to assist with HSE trends is a plus.
- Ability to work with a variety of people and develop a strong HSE culture.
- Ability to create and communicate through networks, newsletters, safety bulletins, and the intranet.
- Ability to eventually conduct thorough HSE audits and inspections.
- Ability to communicate HSE information throughout the organization to senior managers.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds to waist level.
- Ability to carry 50 pounds for a short distance.
- Must be able to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time.
- Able to climb multiple flights of stairs.
- Must be able to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Must pass a medical clearance to wear a respirator.
- Must pass a physical for a hazardous materials worker.
Additional information
Salary for this position ranges between $20 - $45 hourly.
