Position Overview
We are seeking a Marketing, Media & Outreach Intern to help us tell the sanctuary's story and grow the relationships behind it. This is a combined role: roughly half of your time is spent creating digital content on-site with our animals and experiences, and the other half is spent on outreach — contacting media, building partnerships, and managing communication systems.
It is a broad role by design. You will not specialize in one channel; you will see how content, audience growth, and partnerships work together to move a small nonprofit forward. It suits someone who is comfortable switching between filming in the field and writing a pitch email at a desk.
Note: Because this position covers two areas, we prioritize candidates who can commit to more hours per week. Applicants interested in only one side of the role are welcome to say so in their application — we can weight responsibilities toward content or toward outreach based on your strengths and the sanctuary's needs.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation & Social Media
- Film and edit short-form video (Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts)
- - Capture behind-the-scenes content with animals, tours, and events
- - Write posts and captions, and maintain a consistent posting schedule
- - Assist with structured content shoots and promotional or highlight videos
Digital Engagement & Analytics
- Support live streaming initiatives, including ongoing animal livestream content
- - Engage with online audiences and respond to comments and messages
- - Track engagement, reach, and follower growth; report on campaign performance
- - Identify trends and adjust content strategy accordingly
Media, Partnerships & Influencer Outreach
- Research and contact media outlets (TV, news, online publications)
- - Draft outreach emails and pitch materials; coordinate media visits to the sanctuary
- - Identify and connect with nonprofits, brands, and organizations for collaborations
- - Coordinate influencer visits, then capture and repurpose the resulting content
- - Maintain partnership tracking and follow-ups
CRM & Communication Campaigns
- Work within CRM systems to manage contacts and outreach
- - Assist with campaigns via email, SMS, and phone outreach
- - Respond to guest inquiries by email, text, and social media
- - Assist with bookings, rescheduling, and general questions
College & Recruitment Outreach
- Build relationships with universities and academic programs
- - Support internship recruiting efforts and coordinate with professors and career centers
Website, Systems & On-Site Support
- Assist with website updates and improvements
- - Help organize backend systems (Google Drive, Dropbox, CRM) and propose fixes for inefficiencies
- - Assist with sanctuary events, logistics, guest engagement, and on-site operations as needed
What You Will Gain
- A portfolio of real video, social, and written work for a growing brand
- - Direct experience in PR, partnerships, and nonprofit outreach
- - Hands-on work with live campaigns, collaborations, and CRM systems
- - Experience working with animals and unique on-site experiences
- - Mentorship from founders and coordinators
- - Letter of recommendation upon successful completion
- - Professional references from leadership
- - Resume and career development guidance
Compensation
This internship is offered with a weekly stipend, and may also be completed for academic credit or training purposes consistent with applicable U.S. Department of Labor guidelines. Additional compensation details will be discussed during the interview process.
Ideal Candidate
- Studying or recently graduated in Marketing, Communications, Media, Film, Business, or a related field
- - Strong written and verbal communication skills
- - Basic video editing skills (CapCut, Adobe Premiere, or similar)
- - Organized and detail-oriented — able to track outreach and deadlines without reminders
- - Comfortable interacting with guests, partners, media, and team members
- - Comfortable working outdoors and around animals
- - Self-starter who can move between creative and administrative work in the same day
Why This Role is Unique
This is not a typical content or communications internship. You will be creating content with over 240 animals, pitching real media outlets, and working directly with leadership on initiatives that affect how the sanctuary grows. Few internships give you both the creative portfolio and the business-development experience at the same time.
