The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

OCME operates at the intersection of science and the criminal justice system, offering unique public service experience for law students. In addition to providing exposure to legal health and scientific work, and criminal law, the internship in our General Counsel’s office offers experience with New York City municipal government and the diverse work of in-house counsel in any organization.

 

As a Law Intern in the General Counsel’s office in either the Fall 2026 or Spring 2027, you will perform certain entry-level attorney work under the guidance of an experienced attorney. Responsibilities include assisting with:

 

● Attending pre-trial meetings and court appearances (if necessary) with agency witnesses;

● Observing forensic and scientific agency operations (if desired and circumstances allow);

● Reviewing and responding to subpoenas and discovery requests;

● Handling Freedom of Information Law requests;

● Conducting legal research and providing legal advice to agency staff; and

● Reviewing and drafting contracts and other documents.

 

                              MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT                                               

Matriculation at an accredited law school.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Scientific background or interest, including experience with DNA analysis and laboratory procedures
  • Criminal law experience or interest

 

SPECIAL NOTE

  • Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing.

Days and hours of work can be agreed upon with the Legal Department depending on class schedule. Remote work is not generally approved for interns. The internship is not paid; interns should receive either funding or credit from their academic institution.
