CAMPUS SAFETY SPECIALIST (CSS) I

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, patrol and supervise campus activities to assure the well-being and safety of students and staff during non-classroom activities. Assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations. Work actively to prevent and resolve conflicts and disruptions on campus. Improve school climate and deter violence by providing a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and guests on campus.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Patrol and supervise assigned areas of the campus, assuring students are safe, orderly, and within supervised areas.

• Assure that students and visitors on campus are authorized.

• Monitor lunch areas, walkways, restrooms, and parking lots.

• Establish and maintain good rapport with students, staff, and community members.

• Enforce school and District rules, regulations, and procedures.

• Investigate and report unusual, suspicious, or criminal activities.

• Prevent or break up student conflicts and fights.

• Inspect property for and report graffiti and vandalism.

• Write referrals and detention slips as necessary.

• Assist in resolving conflicts and similar problem situations between students.

• Notify the supervisor, as appropriate, of gang activity on or near campus.

• Communicate with school staff using a portable radio.

• Report hazards or unsafe conditions on school property to the principal or designee.

• Provide information to the supervisor by communicating critical site-safety issues in a timely manner.

• Escort and direct authorized visitors to their desired destinations.

• Escort delinquent students to and from administrative offices.

• Retrieve students as requested by administrators.

• Inform and interact with students, personnel, and the general public, as appropriate, to ensure their understanding of laws, enforcement procedures, and the consequences of their actions.

• Communicate with students, parents, administrators, and staff concerning student behavior, attendance, and assigned activities.

• Report incidents involving students, personnel, and the public to school and District administrators and local law-enforcement agencies.

• Participate with the site supervisor and administration in staff training, disaster preparedness, and related safety drills.

• Operate and respond to calls on a two-way radio and follow District protocols.

• Assist in the development and implementation of action plans that provide a safe environment and an immediate response to imminent threats of violence, criminal incidents, emergency medical incidents, automobile accidents, and other emergencies.

• Prepare and maintain various logs, records, and reports related to daily activities, events, and incidents.

• Direct general traffic as needed to maintain order at vehicle and pedestrian crossings.

• Unlock and lock gates, hallway doors, and bathrooms as assigned.

• Assist with controlling classroom disturbances.

• Administer basic first aid to students and staff as necessary.

• Ensure that defibrillators and other first-aid equipment are in working order.

• Assist with plans to provide for a successful opening and closing of the school year.

• Assist with the student detention system by reporting attendance and supporting students in completing assigned tasks.

• Maintain regular and prompt attendance in the workplace.

• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic methods of individual and group supervision.

• Basic interests, attitudes, and emotional development of adolescents.

• Oral and written communication skills.

• Health and safety regulations.

• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

• Basic record-keeping and report-preparation techniques.

• Basic first-aid and CPR procedures.

• School and District policies, rules, and regulations.

• CPI or current restraint training specified by the District.

Ability to:

• Patrol and supervise campus activities to assure the well-being and safety of students and staff during non-classroom activities.

• Assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations.

• Assist in investigating property damage and suspicious or criminal activity.

• Learn, interpret, apply, and explain laws, rules, and regulations.

• Learn to operate a two-way radio and other assigned equipment.

• Prevent or break up student conflicts and fights.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm, and receptive attitude toward students and the community.

• Maintain routine records and prepare incident reports.

• Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Observe health and safety regulations.

• Administer first aid and CPR and operate a defibrillator.

• Develop and maintain cooperative and positive working relationships with individuals contacted during the course of work.

• Carry out oral and written directions.

• Write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties of the position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

Completion of two years of college or university coursework with an emphasis in a social or behavioral science, or the equivalent.

Additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for the required education.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

• Valid First Aid card.

• Valid driver’s license.

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate, including defibrillator training.

• Completion of CPI or current restraint training specified by the District by the end of the probationary period.

• School Security Training (SB 1626) or other required training.

• In accordance with Education Code Section 38001.5, a certificate of completion for a 24-hour School Security Guard Training course must be provided at the time of application.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Environment:

• Indoor and outdoor work environment.

• Seasonal heat, cold, and adverse weather conditions.

• Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Abilities:

Employees in this position must have or be able to:

• Lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds at waist height for short distances.

• Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 150 pounds at waist height for short distances.

• Hear and understand speech at normal levels and over the telephone, with or without hearing aids.

• See, hear, and speak, with or without assistive devices, sufficiently to communicate effectively with others.

• Bend at the waist.

• Reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.

• Grasp objects.

• Push or pull up to 150 pounds for short distances.

• Stand and walk for extended periods.

• See sufficiently to monitor student activities.

• Use the dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment.

• Demonstrate physical agility and stamina.

• Run when necessary.

Hazards:

• Potential physical hazards associated with intervening in fights and other antisocial, illegal, or violent behavior.

• Contact with combative and/or aggressive individuals.
