Our after-school programs operate in four DC elementary schools and serve more than 300 students throughout the school year. We believe every child deserves access to engaging, high-quality learning experiences that build confidence, leadership, and lifelong success.
Position Summary
The After School Instructor is responsible for implementing engaging daily programming, creating a safe and inclusive classroom environment, managing student behavior, adapting lesson plans to meet students' needs, and maintaining strong communication with families, school staff, and Kid Power leadership.
Each instructor is assigned a primary classroom and is responsible for ensuring students experience a positive, structured, and engaging after-school program.

Key ResponsibilitiesProgram & Curriculum Implementation
- Arrive on time and prepared for daily programming.
- Review, adapt, and implement lesson plans to meet classroom and student needs.
- Facilitate Kid Power curriculum, including academics, enrichment activities, Kid Power Circles, and leadership development.
- Prepare materials and implement engaging activities aligned with Kid Power and DCPS standards.
- Foster a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
- Model positive behavior, leadership, and professionalism for students and colleagues.
- Utilize the principles and language of Advancing Youth Development (AYD) throughout programming.
- Communicate implementation challenges and successes with supervisors.
- Support student recruitment, enrollment, and parent outreach efforts as needed.
Youth Development & Classroom Management
- Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of all students throughout program hours.
- Establish and maintain positive classroom culture through effective behavior management strategies.
- Implement classroom incentives and individual behavior support plans.
- Follow Kid Power's behavior management system consistently and appropriately.
- Report significant behavioral concerns to supervisors promptly.
- Immediately report any suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with organizational and legal requirements.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Record and maintain accurate daily student attendance.
- Complete and submit incident reports as required.
- Ensure completion of student, parent, and teacher surveys throughout the school year.
- Attend team meetings, trainings, and required staff meetings on time.
- Complete assigned administrative tasks accurately and within required deadlines.
- Maintain regular communication with supervisors regarding programming and operational needs.
School & Family Partnerships
- Build and maintain positive, professional relationships with school administrators, teachers, and program partners.
- Communicate daily with the school's after-school coordinator and classroom teachers regarding attendance, homework, student concerns, classroom expectations, meals, and shared spaces.
- Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and participation.
- Ensure meaningful communication with every family on a weekly basis.
- Schedule and participate in parent conferences as needed to support student success.
Staff & Volunteer Support
- Supervise and support volunteers and Federal Work Study (FWS) students, when assigned.
- Serve as a positive role model and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
Special Events & Organizational Support
- Participate in occasional evening or weekend events, including:
- Family Engagement Nights
- Produce Pop-Ups
- Community Events
- Fundraisers
- Other Kid Power initiatives
Special events are compensated at the applicable hourly rate.
- Provide additional program or development support as requested.
Professional Expectations
- Notify your supervisor by 9:00 a.m. if you are unable to report to work due to illness or emergency.
- Follow all Kid Power and DCPS policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Attend all required trainings, professional development sessions, and staff meetings.
- Respond to emails, phone calls, and other communications within 24 hours.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and accountability at all times.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and organizational information.
Schedule
Training: Late August - Early Spetember 2026 (dates subject to change)
Program Dates: September 2026 – June 17, 2027 (dates subject to change)
Hours:
- 17–22 hours per week
- Monday–Friday
- 2:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Additional paid meetings, professional development sessions, and trainings are required throughout the school year.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience working with elementary-aged youth in educational, recreational, or community-based settings
- Strong classroom management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and actively participate in indoor and outdoor programming
