Massachusetts State Senate Internship Description
Overview
This internship offers students a hands-on opportunity to learn about the legislative process and the operations of a State Senator’s office. Interns will gain practical experience in public service, legislative research, and constituent engagement while working at the Massachusetts State House. The program is designed to provide insight into how laws are created, debated, and passed in the Commonwealth.
Internships are unpaid, but students may be eligible to earn academic credit by coordinating with their college or university.
Program Highlights
- Professional Development: Opportunities to network with legislators, staff, and advocates while gaining exposure to the legislative process.
Responsibilities
Intern duties include:
- Preparing legislative documents and materials for the Senator
- Tracking budget and legislative requests
- Monitoring and updating constituent casework
- Drafting letters, emails, and other correspondence
- Attending events and hearings at the State House
- Managing the Senate staff email inbox and maintaining aspects of the Senator’s calendar
- Performing administrative tasks such as filing, organizing mailings, and monitoring state/local news
Goals
- Develop an understanding of how Massachusetts state government and the legislature operate
- Explore whether a career in politics or public service is a good fit
- Assist in drafting legislation and/or budget amendments
Schedule
- Monday–Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Massachusetts State House or Plymouth District Office (or remote as needed)
- Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. remote
Eligibility
Ideal candidates are students interested in government, public policy, or civic engagement. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.
