Build a Career — Not Just a Resume
Are you interested in becoming a financial advisor, financial planner or wealth management professional?
George Wealth Management has created a structured development pathway designed to help college students move from the classroom into the financial advisory profession.
For University of Tennessee at Chattanooga students, we have developed a three-year Financial Advisor Development Roadmap that combines selected UTC coursework with hands-on professional development.
Not a UTC student?
We can build a similar development path around the courses and resources available at your college or university.
Our goal is to help you develop from:
College Student → Intern → Financial Planning/Wealth Management Associate → Developing Advisor → Financial Advisor
This Is Not a Traditional Sales Internship
We do not believe future financial advisors should begin by learning how to sell financial products.
We believe they should first learn how to understand people.
Our development philosophy is:
Understand finance → Understand people → Listen → Ask → Coach → Lead → Exercise judgment → Help people make and implement better decisions.
You will develop financial knowledge while also learning communication, psychology, listening, behavioral finance, decision-making, leadership and professional judgment.
The Development Path
Year 1 — Understand the Person
Learn how money works and how people work.
Development may include financial fundamentals, psychology, communication, ethics, SIE preparation, advisor simulations, case studies and professional observation.
The first conversation skill is simple:
Listen → Ask → Clarify → Summarize
Year 2 — Understand the Decision
Begin developing deeper skills in investments, behavioral finance, financial analysis, retirement planning, taxes, estate planning, insurance, leadership and client service.
The goal becomes:
Understand → Identify the barrier → Create clarity → Reduce friction
Year 3 — Advise, Coach & Lead
Integrate planning, investments and human behavior.
Advanced development may include portfolio analysis, retirement planning, tax and estate coordination, business-owner planning, executive planning, client communication, professional collaboration and supervised client participation.
What You May Work On
Depending on your experience and stage of development, you may participate in:
Financial planning research
Investment and portfolio research
Client meeting preparation
Retirement planning analysis
Tax and estate-planning research
Client-service projects
Financial technology
Artificial intelligence and automation
Data analysis
Business-development research
Marketing and communications
Workflow improvement
Advisor conversation simulations
Financial planning case studies
Client-related work will be performed at the appropriate level and under supervision.
Who Should Apply?
We are looking for students who are interested in both numbers and people.
Students studying finance, financial planning, accounting, economics, business analytics, marketing, management, psychology, communications, data analytics, information systems and related fields are encouraged to apply.
More important than your specific major is how you approach learning.
We are looking for people who are:
Curious
Dependable
Coachable
Professional
Good listeners
Comfortable asking questions
Interested in understanding people
Comfortable learning new technology
Willing to receive feedback
Responsible for completing what they start
You do not need to arrive knowing how to be a financial advisor.
That is what the development pathway is designed to teach.
Your University Can Become Part of Your Path
UTC students can follow our existing three-year roadmap connecting university coursework with professional development.
Students from other colleges and universities are also encouraged to apply.
For the right candidate, George Wealth Management can create an individualized roadmap based on:
Your school + Your major + Available courses + Your career stage + The skills required to become a successful financial advisor
Where This Can Lead
For the right person, this is intended to become more than a single-semester internship.
Successful interns may have the opportunity to continue developing with George Wealth Management as their skills, education and professional responsibilities progress.
Technology and artificial intelligence will continue changing financial services. The future financial advisor will need more than technical knowledge.
They will need to listen, ask good questions, understand human behavior, explain complicated choices, exercise judgment and help people make better decisions.
We want to help develop that kind of financial advisor.
