Build AI-native outdoor recreation tech

Glencliff Labs is a Utah-based startup building technology for the outdoors.

We’re building software that helps people make better decisions about where and when to recreate outdoors using real-world conditions, geospatial data, and AI.

We also work with leading organizations in the outdoor industry, including a leading avalanche forecasting center.

Glencliff Labs is an AI-native company: we use AI across the business to enable a very small team to build and operate at the speed of a much larger organization.

Glencliff Labs was founded by an MIT and Dartmouth alum with 15+ years of experience building software products at Fortune 500 companies and high-growth technology startups.

You’ll work directly with the founder on product and engineering decisions.

The Role

We’re looking for a software engineering intern to join us during the launch of a new consumer outdoor product.

This is a hands-on engineering role with substantial ownership. You’ll ship real product features to users rather than work on isolated intern projects.

We care less about credentials than evidence that you can build. The strongest candidates will have shipped software independently, use AI as a core part of their development workflow, and be comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous problems.

  • Depending on your interests and experience, projects could include:
  • Building and shipping new product features
  • Developing AI-powered product capabilities and services
  • Working with maps, geospatial data, and GIS
  • Building data ingestion and processing pipelines
  • Improving the performance and reliability of our applications
  • Prototyping new approaches quickly and turning successful experiments into production software
  • Using AI coding tools and agents throughout the development process

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Evidence of building substantive software projects, whether independently, at school, or through prior work
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals
  • Thoughtful, frequent use of modern AI development tools to plan, build, debug, and iterate
  • Ability to take a loosely defined problem, investigate it, and make progress independently
  • Genuine, active interest in outdoor recreation
  • Ability to commit 10–15 hours per week during the academic year

Nice to have

  • GIS or geospatial development experience
  • Experience working with mapping technologies or geospatial datasets
  • Mobile application development experience
  • Data engineering or data pipeline experience
  • Experience shipping your own projects, contributing to startups, or building products used by real users
  • Computer science or related technical coursework

What You'll Get

You’ll get a firsthand look at what it takes to launch and grow a new software business — from identifying user problems and making product decisions to building features, launching them, analyzing user feedback, and iterating based on what you learn.

You’ll work directly with the founder and have meaningful ownership of production software used by real users.

You’ll also learn how a small AI-native team approaches product development: using modern AI tools alongside strong product and engineering practices to move quickly, test ideas, and ship high-quality software.

Details

  • Commitment: 10–15 hours/week
  • Compensation: $30/hour
  • Location: Remote; Glencliff Labs is based in Utah
  • Start: Fall 2026
  • Duration: Initially during the academic year, with the opportunity to continue longer if it’s a good fit for both sides
