About the Role
We are looking for an entrepreneurial, analytical, and relationship-oriented Business Development & Partnerships Intern to help TBD Investors’ portfolio companies identify new customers, referral sources, markets, and strategic partners.
Business development looks different across our portfolio. For a healthcare company, it may involve building relationships with physicians, schools, employers, or community organizations. For a maritime or technology-enabled business, it may involve identifying enterprise customers, channel partners, or industry collaborators. For an essential-services company, it may involve expanding into new geographies or developing commercial relationships.
You may work primarily with one portfolio company or support projects involving several businesses. Each assignment will have a defined objective, a primary manager, and measurable outcomes.
This is not an observational internship or a traditional sales role. You will conduct research, help develop strategy, engage prospective partners, and build systems that portfolio companies can continue using after the internship.
What You’ll Do
Depending on portfolio needs and your experience, responsibilities may include:
Mapping markets and identifying prospective customers, referral sources, and strategic partners
Researching companies, healthcare providers, schools, employers, industry associations, and other organizations
Analyzing customer segments and prioritizing the most attractive opportunities
Developing business-development and partnership strategies
Conducting outreach to prospective customers, partners, speakers, experts, and collaborators
Preparing outreach materials, presentations, proposals, and meeting briefs
Supporting introductory calls and partnership meetings
Building and maintaining structured business-development pipelines
Tracking outreach, follow-ups, conversion rates, and other performance measures
Conducting competitive research and identifying market gaps
Turning conversations into clear next steps and partnership proposals
Creating processes that allow portfolio companies to scale their business-development efforts
Example Projects
Projects could include:
Building a referral-partnership pipeline for a healthcare-services company
Identifying pediatricians, schools, and family organizations for a pediatric-therapy provider
Researching enterprise customers for a maritime or technology-enabled business
Developing a commercial-partnership strategy for an essential-services company
Identifying acquisition candidates or strategic partners in a fragmented industry
Creating a database of prospective customers in a new market
Developing an outreach campaign for an industry event, program, or new service
Analyzing why prospective customers do or do not convert
Building a repeatable business-development playbook for a growing company
Who Should Apply
We welcome undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including:
Business or entrepreneurship
Marketing or communications
Economics
Healthcare administration
Public health
Engineering
Data analytics
International business
Supply chain or maritime studies
Other related disciplines
Prior business-development or sales experience is helpful but not required. We care more about initiative, intellectual curiosity, communication, persistence, and an interest in building meaningful business relationships.
Strong candidates will be:
Comfortable engaging and building relationships with new people
Strong writers, communicators, and listeners
Analytical and able to prioritize opportunities
Organized and persistent with follow-up
Able to understand the priorities of different organizations
Creative in identifying mutually beneficial partnerships
Comfortable working independently in a remote environment
Proactive, dependable, and eager to take ownership
What You’ll Gain
Hands-on experience developing customers and partnerships for growing companies
Exposure to business models across healthcare, essential services, maritime, education, and technology
Ownership of a defined business-development initiative
Experience conducting outreach and participating in real partnership conversations
Experience developing strategies, proposals, pipelines, and scalable processes
