Adaptive PE Teacher

Job Position: Adaptive PE Teacher

Location: Detroit, MI 48202


Pay Rate: $30.00/hr

As an Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher, you will support students with disabilities in developing the motor, fitness, recreation, leisure, and sports skills needed for success in school and beyond. Through individualized instruction, assessment, collaboration, and advocacy, you will help students achieve their physical education goals while promoting inclusion, independence, and lifelong wellness.

What you'll do:


  • Provide individualized adapted physical education instruction and services for students with disabilities as outlined in their IEPs


  • Assess motor competency, physical fitness, recreation, leisure, play, and sports skills


  • Develop and implement individualized physical education goals and instructional plans


  • Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success


  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to evaluations, goal development, and progress monitoring


  • Adapt activities, equipment, and learning environments to ensure student access and participation


  • Maintain accurate documentation, assessment records, and progress reports


  • Promote inclusive participation opportunities in physical education programs and extracurricular activities


  • Coordinate and support Special Olympics participation and related activities when assigned


  • Foster a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment for all students


What you'll need:


  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate


  • Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (SP) Endorsement


  • Knowledge of adapted physical education practices and special education requirements


  • Experience assessing and supporting students with diverse physical, cognitive, and developmental needs preferred


  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills


  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, students, and families
