Student Photographer – NMU Marketing & Communications

Position Overview
NMU Marketing & Communications is seeking a motivated Student Photographer to join our creative team. The ideal candidate desires hands-on experience in photography and marketing while serving as an enthusiastic representative for Northern Michigan University. You will play a key role in documenting campus culture, capturing university events, and staying actively engaged with student life. Beyond event coverage, you will have the opportunity to produce and execute your own promotional marketing shoots based on current university creative campaigns. Applicants should possess strong organizational skills, enjoy working with people in a professional environment, and demonstrate high reliability.

Photography equipment is provided, and students will gain valuable portfolio experience working alongside a supportive team.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and photograph a wide variety of campus events, activities, and university moments (often scheduled after 4:00 p.m. or on weekends).
  • Proactively approach students, campus groups, and organizations to capture candid moments and gather required photographic content.
  • Plan, produce, and execute original promotional marketing shoots based on current creative campaigns.
  • Positively represent NMU in a professional, welcoming manner while interacting with students, faculty, and campus guests.
  • Assist the lead photographer with campus events, portraits, and promotional shoots.
  • Help set up and break down photography equipment.
  • Organize, catalog, and edit photos in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled NMU student 
  • Basic knowledge of DSLR or mirrorless camera operation and an eagerness to learn.
  • Creative drive and interest in developing concepts for marketing shoots.
  • Strong time-management and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Reliable communication skills, including prompt responses to emails and text messages regarding scheduling updates.
  • Availability for evening and weekend assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior photography experience or portfolio.
  • Basic knowledge of off-camera flash techniques.
  • Have your own equipment (DSLR or mirrorless camera)
  • Familiarity with editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) or videography skills.

Work Schedule

  • Hours: Flexible schedule based on student availability (typically 10 to 15 hours per week, with potential for up to 24 hours per week).
  • Expectations: High responsiveness and reliability are essential, as event coverage is occasionally scheduled on short notice.
