Position Summary

Gotion is seeking a motivated Quality Engineer Intern to support quality and manufacturing operations at our Manteno, Illinois facility. This internship provides hands-on experience in quality assurance, process improvement, data analysis, root-cause investigation, and manufacturing quality systems within a high-volume battery manufacturing environment.

The intern will work closely with Quality Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production, Process Engineering, and other cross-functional teams to monitor quality performance, investigate defects, analyze data, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student pursuing Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Quality Engineering, or a related discipline.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Quality Engineers with monitoring manufacturing quality and process performance.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze quality and production data.
  • Support investigations of product and process defects.
  • Assist with root-cause analysis and corrective action activities.
  • Help identify trends and recurring quality issues using data analysis.
  • Support implementation and verification of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Assist with developing quality reports, charts, and presentations.
  • Participate in production-floor quality audits and process observations.
  • Assist with inspection, measurement, and testing activities.
  • Support the development and maintenance of quality documentation and work instructions.
  • Assist with tracking quality metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects designed to improve product quality and reduce defects.
  • Work with Production and Engineering teams to identify opportunities to improve process consistency.
  • Assist with process capability and statistical analysis activities.
  • Participate in quality meetings and cross-functional problem-solving activities.
  • Support other quality and engineering projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in:
    • Industrial Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Manufacturing Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Materials Science/Engineering
    • Quality Engineering
    • Or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong interest in manufacturing quality and continuous improvement.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to analyze data and identify trends.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on-site in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred

  • Coursework in statistics, quality engineering, manufacturing, materials, or process engineering.
  • Exposure to SPC, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or quality management concepts.
  • Experience with Excel PivotTables, formulas, charts, or data analysis.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software or engineering tools.
  • Previous manufacturing, laboratory, quality, or engineering internship experience.
  • Experience with engineering or academic projects involving data collection and analysis.
  • Interest in battery technology, energy storage, electric vehicles, or advanced manufacturing.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an analytical and detail-oriented engineering student who enjoys solving problems and understanding why something went wrong.

We are looking for students who can work with data, communicate effectively with production teams, investigate problems, and develop logical solutions.

Previous professional quality engineering experience is not required. Academic projects, laboratory experience, manufacturing coursework, or previous technical work can provide relevant experience.

Education

Required: Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.

Target Graduation: Open to students graduating in 2027, 2028, or 2029.

Work Environment

  • Primarily on-site at Gotion's Manteno, Illinois manufacturing facility.
  • Work will include both office/engineering areas and manufacturing-floor environments.
  • May require walking and standing on the manufacturing floor.
  • Must follow all applicable safety and quality procedures.
  • Appropriate PPE must be worn in designated manufacturing areas.

Internship Objective

By the completion of the internship, the student should have developed a foundational understanding of how quality engineering, manufacturing processes, data analysis, and continuous improvement work together to produce safe, reliable, and consistent products.

The intern will gain practical experience applying engineering and statistical concepts to real-world manufacturing quality problems.

This position is designed as an entry-level learning opportunity and does not require prior professional quality engineering experience.
