Civil Design Technician

The City of Morganton is seeking a Civil Design Technician I to join our Engineering Division within the Department of Development and Design Services. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for someone interested in civil engineering, drafting, surveying, or municipal infrastructure.
In this role, you'll work alongside experienced engineering professionals assisting with the design and development of water, sewer, stormwater, transportation, and parks projects. You'll gain hands-on experience using CAD software, assisting with field surveys, preparing engineering drawings, researching property records, and supporting development review by verifying water and sewer availability.
What You'll Do
- Assist with preparing engineering drawings and maps using CAD
- Support field surveying and data collection
- Help verify water and sewer availability for residential and commercial development
- Prepare NCDOT encroachment permits
- Maintain project records, databases, and spreadsheets
- Conduct deed and property research
- Assist with a variety of engineering and infrastructure projects
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid North Carolina driver's license
- Interest or experience in drafting, surveying, engineering technology, or civil engineering
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, CAD, or a related field
- Experience with AutoCAD or Civil 3D
- Experience with surveying or civil design

Anticipated starting pay is $48,349 - $53,000; well qualified candidates whose education, certifications, and directly related experience exceed the basic requirements may be considered for a higher salary.
