Journalist Intern
The Chattanooga Times Free Press is seeking a motivated, curious, and energetic Journalist Intern to join our newsroom. This role focuses on telling stories that matter to local students while keeping a pulse on the broader Chattanooga community. Working alongside veteran reporters and editors, you will gain hands-on experience enterprise reporting, covering breaking news, and crafting engaging content for both print and digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Student Focused Coverage: Pitch and write stories on topics directly impacting middle school, high school, and college students across Hamilton County and the surrounding region (e.g., campus life, youth activism, education policy, and youth culture).
- Local News Reporting: Cover local community events, government meetings, human-interest features, and breaking news under the guidance of desk editors.
- Digital & Multimedia Content: Assist with digital storytelling, including writing web-first headlines, gathering social media content, taking basic photography, or recording audio/video for online coverage.
- Source Cultivation: Build strong relationships with student leaders, local educators, university officials, and community members to develop original story leads.
- Fact-Checking & Editing: Adhere to AP Style standards, verify facts independently, and work closely with copy editors to deliver clean, accurate copy on tight deadlines.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) an undergraduate or graduate program in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid understanding of news writing basics.
- Familiarity with AP Style, basic media ethics, and newsgathering techniques.
- Demonstrated interest in local journalism and youth/student affairs.
- Active presence on key social media platforms used for news gathering and distribution (Instagram, X, TikTok, etc.).
- Ability to work flexibly, manage multiple assignments, and meet strict deadlines.
Preferred Experience
- Experience writing for a high school or college student newspaper/publication.
- Familiarity with Chattanooga, Hamilton County, or the Greater East Tennessee region.
- Basic photography or video editing skills.
