Health and Fitness Intern

The Peninsula Health Care District Intern supports exceptional member service, safe fitness center operations, and health and wellness programming at the PHCD Health & Fitness Center. This internship is designed for a student or recent graduate interested in gaining hands-on experience in fitness, wellness, exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, public health, or a related field.   

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about health and wellness and interested in working with older adults. Under the direction of Fitness Center staff, the intern will assist members, support fitness programming, learn proper exercise techniques, and help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment.  

Job Relationships 

Responsible to: PHCD Health & Fitness Center Director and Assistant Manager Interrelationships: Fitness Center members, community partners, and PHCD staff 

Essential Duties 

  • Greet members, prospective members, and guests in a friendly and professional manner.  
  • Support front desk operations, including greeting members, answering phone calls, responding to questions, and maintaining a welcoming and organized reception area.  
  • Learn to use Mindbody for member check-ins, payment processing, scheduling appointments, and basic account management.  
  • Monitor the fitness floor and report safety concerns, equipment issues, or members needing assistance. 
  • Learn to safely demonstrate fitness equipment and proper exercise techniques. 
  • Shadow and assist with new-member orientations, fitness assessments, personal training, and group exercise classes. 
  • Help set up and break down classes, workshops, social activities, and special events. 
  • Assist with preparation of outreach events 
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe facility through daily cleaning tasks, walk-throughs, and restroom checks. 
  • Complete assigned tasks and assist staff based on center needs. 

Customer Service 

  • Respond to member questions and requests promptly and professionally. 
  • Take initiative to assist members within the intern’s level of responsibility. 
  • Refer concerns or situations requiring additional support to the appropriate staff member. 
  • Help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for members of all abilities and fitness levels. 

Interpersonal Relationships 

  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with members, guests, and teammates. 
  • Follow the appropriate chain of command when addressing unresolved concerns. 
  • Demonstrate flexibility when priorities or assignments change. 
  • Remain calm and organized in a busy environment with frequent interruptions. 
  • Accept feedback and apply coaching to improve performance. 

 

Aptitude 

  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to follow instructions, safety procedures, and center policies. 
  • Ability to learn the safe operation of fitness equipment. 
  • Ability to work effectively with older adults and individuals with varying fitness abilities. 
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn the Mindbody system. 

 

Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or GED required. 
  • Current student or recent graduate in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, public health, nursing, allied health, gerontology, or a related field preferred. 
  • Interest in health, wellness, fitness, and working with older adults. 
  • Strong customer service, communication, and teamwork skills. 
  • Dependable, professional, organized, and eager to learn. 
  • Previous fitness, recreation, healthcare, or customer service experience preferred but not required. 
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification 
  • Personal training or group exercise certification is a plus but not required. 

 

Compensation and Benefits 

  • $17.86 per hour
