Shipyard Project Manager – Government Operations
Location: Bayonne, New Jersey Status: Immediate Opening
Position Overview
Bayonne Drydock & Repair Corp. is seeking an experienced Project Manager – Government Operations to oversee the safe and efficient execution of drydock projects within our Graving Dock (“Dock 7”). This role manages complex repair and maintenance projects for government clients, including MSC and MARAD vessels. The Project Manager will ensure project milestones, schedules, quality standards, and safety objectives are consistently met.
Key Responsibilities
• Review full project specifications and develop a comprehensive project management plan, including manpower requirements, subcontractor involvement, timelines, and material needs.

Ensure all original work scopes are assigned to in-house personnel prior to project commencement.

Confirm subcontractor assignments related to the original scope of work before the project begins.

Anticipate potential project challenges and create mitigation strategies to maintain schedule and performance goals.

Develop and maintain the project schedule (Gantt chart) and adjust as needed to keep the project on track.

Identify potential areas for contract change orders or growth work; coordinate strategy with supervisors and confirm award of additional work.

Coordinate with the Dockmaster to plan and ensure the safe docking and undocking of vessels.

Lead the daily production meeting with supervisors, management, and separately with customer representatives, this responsibility cannot be delegated.

Review supervisors’ “Plan of the Day” submissions, revising as necessary to maintain schedule compliance.

Immediately report significant project inefficiencies to BDD Management, including any work items at risk of exceeding the performance period.

Oversee the Quality Assurance (QA) Department’s scheduling of inspections, checkpoints, and final signoffs.

Meet weekly with supervisory staff to verify work delegation, review scope understanding, confirm material orders, and ensure timeline alignment.

Review and evaluate weekend manpower requirements for efficiency based on remaining work scope.

Prepare disciplinary action documentation for substandard employee performance, particularly supervisors—and regularly submit nominations for Employee of the Month.

Participate in contract change order negotiations to represent and justify Bayonne Drydock & Repair Corp.’s position.

Delegate tasks to QA, Purchasing, and Estimating Departments to support streamlined documentation and workflow processes.
Qualifications

Proven experience managing large-scale shipyards, drydock government vessel repair projects.

Proficiency in Microsoft Project is required.

Strong leadership, planning, and communication skills.

Ability to work in a high-intensity operational environment with strict deadlines.

Weekend availability is required.
