Elementary Literacy Tutor

Stand for Children Oregon / Literacy Instruction Future Teachers (LIFT), in partnership with Western Oregon University, is hiring university students to serve as paid high-dosage literacy tutors in local elementary schools.

This is a part-time, temporary opportunity ideal for education majors or students interested in teaching, literacy, and building instructional relationships with children in first through third grade. Students majoring in Education are preferred, but students with experience working with elementary students are encouraged to apply.

Why This Matters
High-dosage tutoring is one of the most effective, research-backed ways to support early literacy. Tutors help students build critical reading skills while gaining valuable classroom experience. Tutors will be trained in a Science of Reading-aligned curriculum, develop strong supportive relationships with students, and engage in a professional learning community for collaboration and growth.

Pay & Schedule

• $20/hour
• 8–10 hours per week
• Weekday, school-day hours, 3-4 days per week, in person, required
• 10-week tutoring cycle
• Paid training included (~10 hours)
• Ongoing, paid professional learning included (~1-2 hours per week)

What You’ll Do

• Receive structured, science of reading informed literacy tutoring training
• Provide structured literacy tutoring to a small group of elementary students
• Work in local schools, 3-4 days per week for 10 weeks
• Build hands-on literacy instruction experience and strong, positive relationships with young learners

Experience and Commitment You Bring 

• Education major preferred, but not required.
• Experience working with elementary school aged students is strongly preferred. 
• Experience working with small groups of students.
• Experience with supporting students’ behavior.
• A willingness to learn and grow, to ask for support, and to offer support to peers.

Timeline

• Required training begins in September 
• Background check with school district required 
• Tutoring begins shortly after training is completed
• Tutoring cycle ends in December 2026
• Opportunity to continue for future tutoring cycles
