Project Management Internship
Cooper Construction’s internship program allows students to gain hands-on experience from industry professionals and exposure to large construction sites. During your internship, you will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of the project life cycle as you work with and assist Project Managers, Estimators, and Superintendents in the office and on the jobsite.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicating with subcontractors, vendors, and municipalities on various issues that may arise, such as procurement and delivery of materials, running down pricing for change orders, searching for subcontractor(s) to perform a scope of work, and procuring permits.
- Reading & Understanding Drawings: The Project Management and Field Teams will work with you on how to read drawings accurately, focusing on details and the relationship between all types of drawings, and how to look ahead to avoid conflicts.
- Project Specifications & Request for Proposal (RFP) Documents: You will learn to understand the project specifications and how they relate to the drawings, materials, and how they are used during the construction and submittal process.
- Submittals: Submittals are imperative to each project. You will learn how they should be reviewed using the project documents and specifications. You will also learn how to create a submittal schedule and how to submit a substitution request.
- Request for Information (RFIs): You will learn how to write, document, and review RFI’s. Review the possible cost/schedule impact of RFIs and make sure to note them in the RFI. How to incorporate RFI responses into the drawings. Collaborate with our team (Superintendent, PM, Subcontractors & Suppliers) to come up with a suggested solution to the issue or question.
- Daily Reports: Review the importance of daily reports and how a proper one should look.
- Document Management: Ensure that all documents and drawings are up to date in Viewpoint, PlanGrid, and Procore. Assist with the printing of documents for the job trailers.
- Scheduling: Review three-week lookahead schedules and their alignment with the overall project schedule; provide project management input to support schedule accuracy.
- Safety: Work with the Safety Director to obtain OSHA-10 certification and participate in weekly field safety topics.
- Punch List: Support the creation and management of pre-punch and final punch lists; coordinate with trades to complete items and follow up until all work is resolved.
- Time on Site: Gain regular on-site experience, observe construction activities, compare progress to schedules, interpret drawings in the field, and assist with progress documentation.

REQUIREMENTS
- Coursework towards a bachelor’s degree or above in any of the following disciplines: Construction Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent studies is required.
- Experience in using Microsoft Office applications to develop training support materials.
- Available to work a full-time schedule (40 hours per week) in the Birmingham, Alabama office.
