Art Cataloging Translator-Japanese

The Visual Resources Center (VRC) in the Department of Art History seeks a student employee with strong experience in Japanese art, an interest in image archives, and Japanese reading and translation skills for the position of Art Cataloging Translator—Japanese Art

 

The Cataloging Translator will translate published material and be trained to input art cataloging information (including descriptive attributes and information about works of art, objects, and architecture) for images of Japanese art and architecture for inclusion in the VRC’s LUNA database. VRC staff members will train the Art Cataloging Translator on best practices for recording data and describing artwork. 
 

The metadata records will include information such as the title, date, style period, materials, repository, subject headings, and more. The metadata records will be informed by published catalogs and online sources. The Cataloging Translator’s work will play a crucial role in making these images available to students and faculty at UChicago this year. In addition to translation work, the Cataloging Translator will also catalog a collection of Nihonga paintings and a collection of Koizumi Kishio woodblock prints. 
 

Compensation and Hours

The Cataloging Translator is an on-site position that requires access to project materials and extensive screen time and computer work. The position is budgeted for 50 hours of work total, $20/hour. Additional work may be possible, but is not guaranteed. The work week is during weekdays between 9am–5pm; work schedule is reasonably flexible, but we do ask for a weekly work schedule each quarter and that shifts be at least 2 hours long. 
 

Eligibility and Preferred Skills

Japanese language skills required. All majors and areas of speciality are encouraged to apply. Students with an interest in modern & contemporary art history, Japanese history and culture, or libraries and archives preferred.
