SEASONAL ECOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN I
 

REPORTS TO: Ecological Supervisor 

FLSA STATUS: Hourly / Non-Exempt

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-time 

LOCATION / TRAVEL: On-site (10%) / Local Travel (90%)
 

ROLE SUMMARY
The Ecological Technician I supports the ecological restoration team—including Crew Leaders, Ecological Technicians II, and 
Supervisors—in the restoration and stewardship of natural areas through ecosystem management practices. Work includes 
herbicide application, prescribed fire support, invasive species control, brush cutting and clearing, native plant installation, 
and other field restoration activities. The Technician I reports to assigned job sites daily unless otherwise directed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support restoration of site health under the direction of Supervisors, Crew Leaders, and Ecological Technicians II 
based on project and site needs
• Perform ecological restoration tasks, including but not limited to: herbicide application, prescribed burn preparation 
and implementation support, invasive species removal, brush cutting and clearing, native seeding and planting of 
plugs, trees, and shrubs
• Maintain awareness of jobsite safety practices, including proper use of equipment and personal protective 
equipment (PPE), and promptly communicate unsafe conditions or practices
• Monitor weather conditions and recognize changing field conditions; adjust work activities as directed to 
accommodate safety and operational needs (e.g., herbicide application timing, burn conditions, field access)
• Operate, inspect, clean, maintain, and perform minor field repairs on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is 
ready for the next workday
• Support efficient jobsite operations through preparedness, situational awareness, and adherence to company 
procedures and safety protocols
• Perform other duties as assigned by Crew Leaders, Supervisors, or management

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Must possess or be able to obtain an Illinois Pesticide/Herbicide Operator License by start date (or within a timeframe 
established by the company)
• Must complete S-130/190 Wildland Fire Certification (or obtain within a timeframe established by the company)
• Interest in biology, ecological restoration, environmental science, or related field
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• Basic ability to identify native and invasive plant species, or willingness to develop proficiency
• Ability to safely operate power tools, hand tools, and field equipment
• Basic knowledge of herbicide use, chemical handling, and restoration burn practices
• Knowledge of native plant installation techniques, including seeding and planting methods 
• Ability to assess field conditions and contribute to efficient work execution
• Working knowledge of and commitment to company safety standards and operational procedures
• Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and build positive working relationships
• Ability to manage work activities to meet schedules and project deadlines

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to work safely in variable outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, precipitation, and uneven terrain
• Comfortable working in forests, prairies, wetlands, and other natural landscapes
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform physically demanding fieldwork for extended periods
• May be exposed to smoke, chemicals, insects, and other conditions associated with restoration field work
