COALMONT ENGINEERING

Engineered Solutions for Industry

Software Engineer — Digital Systems

Build the Platform an Engineering Firm Runs On

Full-Time  |  Occasional Travel

Who We Are

Coalmont Engineering is a multi-disciplined Electrical & Mechanical Engineering firm specializing in complex industrial automation and power distribution systems. Since 1996, we've partnered with some of the most respected companies in heavy industry—steel, paper, mining, automotive, nuclear, and more—to solve challenging problems and keep their operations running at peak performance.

Our Birmingham-area facility (McCalla, AL) offers a full range of large-city to rural living options, a short, low-traffic commute, and a team culture that emphasizes hands-on learning, collaboration, and long-term career growth.

The Coalmont Difference

We're the firm that does the engineering. At many large manufacturers, young engineers spend their early years identifying work and managing the outside firms who execute it. At Coalmont, you are that firm—designing, building, and commissioning real systems across steel, paper, mining, automotive, and more. You'll gain more hands-on engineering in your first years here than you would in a decade of overseeing contractors.

And because we're an established but fast-growing firm, your work is visible, your responsibility comes early, and your career rises with ours—you're a name here, not a badge number.

Accelerate your career 10x faster than industry peers. That's not a slogan—it's what our own engineers, two to four years in, describe after comparing notes with the peers they graduated with, once they realized how much they'd been trusted with and how fast they were growing.

Why Join Us?

Coalmont runs its operations on an internal platform we call Manager, built on Ignition—time tracking, project assignment, and live job-costing pulled from our accounting system. We're expanding it into a forward-looking master schedule with Gantt-based planning across roughly 100 concurrent projects. As our Software Engineer for Digital Systems, you'll own and grow this platform—real software, built by a trained developer, that the whole company depends on every day. This is the founding role of our Digital Systems group. You'll:

  • Own a real platform end-to-end, instead of being one cog in a large software organization.
  • Build tools that directly change how a heavy-industrial firm plans, schedules, and measures its work.
  • Work at the seam of software and industrial systems—databases, dashboards, integrations, and OT.
  • Help define a brand-new engineering discipline as it grows.

What You'll Do

This is a builder's role for someone with genuine software fundamentals who's drawn to industrial and hard-engineering problems.

Early Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain Manager modules in Ignition Perspective, backed by SQL named queries and views.
  • Build out the master-schedule module—the activity and assignment data model, project schedules, rollups, manpower planning, and crew-assignment validation.
  • Integrate and reconcile job-costing data from our Sage Intacct accounting system, keeping quoted-versus-actual live at every level.
  • Extend the time-tracking calendar and job/project assignment features, including activity-level time coding.
  • Engineer for scale—keeping rollups in SQL views and gateway scripts so the system stays fast across hundreds of activities.
  • Partner directly with project managers as your users, shipping value job-by-job and then platform-wide.

What You'll Grow Into

  • Anchor and expand the Digital Systems group as it takes on more of the company's software and systems work.
  • Extend into IT/OT project work and industrial data integration.
  • Take on Coalmont's internal server and network systems through a planned, phased handoff.
  • Grow into a systems and platform lead defining how the company plans, schedules, and measures every project.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering with a strong software foundation.
  • Genuine programming education and capability—software design, data structures, and databases (SQL plus a scripting language such as Python or JavaScript).
  • The ability to turn ambiguous operational needs into reliable, maintainable software, with strong attention to data integrity.
  • Integrity, strong work ethic, and a self-starter mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work on a team.

Preferred (not required)

  • Exposure to Ignition (Perspective), SCADA/HMI, or similar industrial platforms.
  • Database design, dashboards and reporting, or ERP/accounting-system integration.
  • Familiarity with Gantt scheduling, resource planning, or project-controls concepts.
  • Interest in industrial and manufacturing operations—and in supporting real projects as the company grows.

Benefits & Perks

  • Highly competitive salary with performance bonuses.
  • Medical coverage for you and your family.
  • Paid holidays and company-matched IRA.
  • Mentorship and training from experienced engineers.
  • A clear career path with opportunities for advancement.

The Work You'll Impact

You'll build and extend the systems Coalmont runs on, including:

  • The Manager platform—time tracking, project assignment, and job costing.
  • A live master schedule and Gantt planning across ~100 concurrent projects.
  • Sage Intacct job-cost integration and quoted-versus-actual reporting.
  • IT/OT project work and industrial data integration.
  • Internal server, network, and systems infrastructure over time.
