Art Adventures Educator

Youth Outdoor Workshops runs nature-based afterschool programming for K-3 kids in Richmond. Our Art Adventures program takes art outside - think stick sculptures, nature printing, mud kitchens, fairy house construction, and projects that use the natural world as both subject and material. No worksheets or coloring pages.

We're looking for a single Art Adventures educator at William Fox Elementary starting the week of September 14th. Sessions run Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays, 2:30-5:00pm, at $18/hr, and the program ends the first week of Novemer.

What we're looking for:

You're a practicing artist with real teaching experience. You know what it feels like to be in the middle of making something with no guaranteed outcome, and you can bring that sensibility into a program with 8-12+ six year olds . You don't need to specialize in any particular medium, but your own creative practice should be active and genuine - kids notice the difference.

Familiarity with Montessori philosophy or alternative education approaches is a real plus. Our Art Adventures programming is child-led, and intentionally open-ended. If that framework is new to you but excites you, we'd still love to hear from you. If it's something you've worked within before, tell us about that.

The candidates who move forward from our interviews will be naturally energetic, confident, and charismatic.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Active creative practice in any visual art medium
  • Has reliable transportation
  • Available each and every day of our 8-week season
  • Comfort working outdoors
  • Interested in this role because of an authentic interest in education, not as a back-up.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Montessori, Reggio Emilia, or other child-led education frameworks
  • Experience with natural materials, land art, or nature-based art specifically
  • Experience teaching or facilitating art with children

To apply: Top candidates can send a resume and a short note to youthoutdoorworkshops@gmail.com. Tell us about your own creative practice, one experience teaching or working with kids that's stuck with you, and please confirm your availability during our program dates.
