Biology Learning Assistant (LA)

About the Role

Learning Assistants (LAs) play a vital role in enhancing student understanding through peer-to-peer interaction. Rather than providing direct instruction, LAs foster a collaborative learning environment by facilitating discussions, clarifying concepts, and promoting active engagement.

Responsibilities

• Lead and facilitate discussions that encourage student engagement, address misconceptions, and support comprehension.
• Assist with activities and questions during lectures.
• Provide in-person and Zoom office hours to assist students with assignments and course concepts.
• Collaborate closely with students, peers, and the professor to enhance the learning experience.

Qualifications

• Strong academic performance in biology-related coursework.
• Solid understanding of fundamental biological concepts, including biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse student groups.
• Commitment to the role, including availability for Friday afternoon sessions (starting at 2:30 pm).
• Prior experience as a tutor, peer mentor, or in a similar role is preferred but not required.

Course Overview: BIO 1610-301 Fundamentals of Biology I (MWF, starting at 2:30 pm)

• This course introduces key concepts in biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics. Topics include biological macromolecules, mitosis, meiosis, DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene expression regulation, and inheritance laws.
