Supporting Aspiring Mathematics Educators - The NYU Teacher Residency

Have you considered a career in Mathematics education where you can help unlock the potential of others but don’t know where to begin? If this sounds like you, The NYU Teacher Residency prepares aspiring Mathematics educators to be not just inspiring figures, but effective relationship-builders capable of holistically mentoring all learners according to their needs.

Our Math residents earn a Master of Arts in Teaching online while honing their skills in a co-teaching setting with an experienced mentor teacher they collaborate with for a full school year. You'll bring your deep content knowledge and your mentor teacher will help you marry pedagogy and practice in a way that enables all learners to access the subject.

Job outcomes are embedded within the residency model and residents have a number of post-graduate professional options they can pursue according to their individual preferences.

Mathematics residents come from very different academic and personal backgrounds but often share a few key traits:

  • A deep knowledge of all things Math, especially the subjects taught in schools: Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry
  • A belief that math doesn't need to be scary or difficult for learners, provided that they are supported in a way that makes math relevant and fun
  • A knack for explaining a concept in a number of different ways
  • A desire to teach all learners - those who love numbers like us and those who may not - including the neurodivergent and kids learning English as a New Language

While no formal education training is required to apply, a commitment to inclusive, equitable education and a desire to support all students is essential. Please follow the steps below:
