Supporting Aspiring History & Social Studies Educators - The NYU Teacher Residency
Have you considered a career in History & Social Studies education where you can tie the past, present, and future together for today's learners but don’t know where to begin? If this sounds like you, The NYU Teacher Residency prepares aspiring History educators to be not just inspiring figures, but effective relationship-builders capable of holistically mentoring all learners according to their needs.
Our residents earn a Master of Arts in Teaching History online while honing their skills in a co-teaching setting with an experienced mentor teacher they collaborate with for a full school year. You will bring the deep content knowledge of History & Studies and your mentor teacher will help you marry pedagogy to practice as you learn how to effectively reach all learners.
Job outcomes are embedded within the residency model and residents have a number of post-graduate professional options they can pursue according to their individual preferences.
Residents who pursue our History & Social Studies track come from very different academic and personal backgrounds but often share a few key traits:
- Deep content knowledge across eras, including US & World History, Civics, Government, Political Science, and International Relations
- A knack for tying together disparate threads across historical contexts in a way that helps others see the connections across eras and cultures
- An understanding that our students interact with our content in many ways based upon their lived experience and that those multiple perspectives provide a rich learning opportunity
- A desire to teach all students - not just those interested in our content - including neurodivergent students and those learning English as a New Language.
While no formal education training is required to apply, a commitment to inclusive, equitable education and a desire to support all students is essential. Please follow the steps below:
