Supporting Aspiring English Educators - The NYU Teacher Residency
Have you considered a career in English education where you can share your love of the written word with others but don't know where to begin? If this sounds like you, The NYU Teacher Residency prepares aspiring English educators to be not just inspiring figures, but effective relationship-builders capable of holistically mentoring all learners according to their needs.
Our residents earn a Master of Arts in Teaching online that will focus on how to translate your skills as a writer and critical analyst of diverse texts in a co-teaching setting with an experienced mentor teacher who will provide a model for how to marry pedagogy and practice.
Job outcomes are embedded within the residency model and residents have a number of post-graduate professional options they can pursue according to their individual preferences.
Residents pursuing our ELA track come from many backgrounds but often share a few key traits:
- Deep content knowledge of all things English: literature across eras and genres, poetry, creative writing & composition, textual analysis, copyediting.
- A curiosity around ideas, both new and familiar, that inspires passionate, productive discourse with others.
- An understanding that students will encounter our subject matter in vastly different ways and our role as educators is to build bridges to them in an authentic, relevant way - including neurodivergent students and those learning English as a New Language.
While no formal education training is required to apply, a commitment to inclusive, equitable education and a desire to support all students is essential. Please follow the steps below:
