Overview: Community Action Network (CAN) partners with children, youth, and families from under-resourced neighborhoods to help them thrive. Education Program Assistants play a key role in facilitating successful programming at CAN. They contribute to a welcoming, collaborative environment. Successful Program Assistants take initiative, are productive and engaged, and work well in a team. Program Assistants build meaningful relationships with colleagues, program participants, and community members. The Program Assistant position is a temporary part-time role that is paid hourly.
This position is particularly suited for those in education, social work, psychology, and other related fields. It provides hands-on experience with children who live in under-resourced families and face multiple challenges. In this role, you will learn to work as a team and effectively engage with children.
Compensation & Hours:
- Pay Rate: $19.42/hour
- Specific work hours are approved by the Site Director and are determined by Community Center needs and the Program Assistant’s availability
- After School Program hours: Mondays through Thursdays from September to December and January to May. Available work hours are site-specific. Times are generally between 3 pm and 6:30 pm
- *At least two program days a week are required, and up to four days a week are available
Qualifications:
- Experience and/or interest in working with children, youth, and families
- Reliable personal or public transportation to work location
- Ability to complete initial online forms and training before the start date
- Acceptable driving history preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency or ability to quickly develop proficiency with training in Google Drive and other online tools as needed
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, quickly, and effectively with parents, community members, team members, and supervisors
- Ability to work collaboratively and professionally in a dynamic team
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
- Ability to effectively work with diverse populations in a non-judgmental manner
- Ability to represent the agency professionally
- Takes initiative and demonstrates flexibility
- Contributes to a welcoming, positive, and intentional culture
- Ability to work non-traditional hours that can go until 7 pm if working at the After School Program
- Available for all summer camp dates if working at Summer Camp
- Ability to demonstrate cultural awareness and humility while working with diverse, underrepresented populations
Essential Job Duties-
- Help prepare space and materials for program
- Coordinate and facilitate social-emotional activities, academic lessons, projects, games, etc.
- Engage with children in small groups, large groups, and individually. Typically a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children can be expected
- In After School Program, work with children ranging from Kindergarten through 12th grade (some locations only have programming for elementary and/or middle school students)
- Provide academic support to students as needed
- Facilitate transition times from one activity to another
- Monitor student safety and behavior and provide responsible supervision
- Follow behavior management strategies/plans and work with team members to provide consistent and age-appropriate guidance
- Support enrichment group lesson facilitation and goals
- Prepare meals and snacks for the attending students
- Clean up the centers during and after program, including but not limited to taking out the trash, washing dishes, sweeping, mopping the floor, and sanitization protocols
