Interior Designer
Job Description for Interior Designer @ Alexander Butler | Design Services, LLC
At AB|DS, we provide services for the renovation of client-owned Residential spaces, primarily in the Manhattan area, and occasionally into the surrounding Boroughs, Counties & Neighboring States. Recently completed work includes the renovations of a 6000sf Upper East Side Duplex project, and a gut renovation of a Columbus Circle Penthouse, overlooking Central Park, both which had full Interior Services by AB|DS. Current work includes a 3000sf TriBeCa loft, a small but charming Two-Bedroom renovation on Hudson St. and a 2000sf two-apartment combination in the Upper West Side overlooking Lincoln Center. We have just signed a renovation of a House in Cape Elizabeth, Maine for a repeat client, as well.
Typically, we go through each project from conception to completion, covering all phases and considering every aspect holistically. Our work begins with client conversations, walk-thrus, and the sharing of inspiration & precedent imagery. From there, we study layouts - in sketch and CAD form - providing our clients with schemes based on their initial ideas, as well as other creative ones they may not have considered. In Schematic Design, we give life to the plan, through further study in elevations, 3D modeling, and early material selection.
In the Design Development & Construction Document process, we will work together to create drawing sets, coordinate 3D model/VR experiences with 3rd party partners, manage the bid process with one or more Contractors, and file with the Condo/Coop’s and City agencies. In parallel, we select stones, wood veneers, tiles, flooring, and any interior furnishings, if we are contracted to do so. We will design or curate everything from the kitchen cabinets to the style and scale of vanity hardware – no detail should be overlooked. At AB|DS everyone has a voice and no contribution is too small.
A candidate for this position will have excellent CAD skills (Rhino & Sketchup are a huge plus, Autocad is a must), impeccable color sense, and experience with client presentations, contributing confidently & persuasively both in the meeting itself and with the Presentation Documents. It requires one to be versatile in a variety of styles and sensibilities, and to be able to draw from both historical and contemporary precedents with ease. Organization, promptness, and the ability to manage one’s time and communicate effectively – especially on those days working remotely – are absolutely critical.
Main responsibilities would involve all manner of interior design assignments, including furniture layouts; sourcing & presenting options in-house, and subsequently to the clients; providing & documenting quotes / lead times; setting up & formatting budgets; ordering & tracking progress of materials; and follow-ups & receipt of the items in person, on site. Styling skills for photography shoots and a fluency with the technical aspects of social media are a bonus.
Salary & Benefits
This is a long-term, full-time position, with ample opportunity for growth, and you will find an equitable environment with plenty of space for individual contribution. Salary is aligned with experience, 0-3 years ideally with a range of $55,000-$70,000 annual, paid in equal installments on the 15th and last day of the month. Included in that is a guaranteed bonus of $5,000, which will be provided (with no stipulations but in lieu of direct Health Insurance benefits), and will be payable in full after probationary period (3 months) is reached, and subsequently each year on the anniversary of employment. Transit cards will also be provided.
Employment Schedule, Paid Time Off & Sick Leave
A candidate for this position shall work at least 40 hours per week for 52 weeks each calendar year, less Paid Time Off. One week means Monday through Friday, preferably during Business Hours. Working remotely is permitted, but towards the beginning of employment, more in-person office time shall be necessary. There will be no mandated number of days in office, but a Monday thru Thursday schedule will be unofficially preferred. The office will be closed for the week between Christmas & New Year’s, as well as National holidays as follows: New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, MLK, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. After the Probationary Employment period of three (3) months, Employee shall be entitled to 10 additional days paid time off after consulting with Employer. PTO will be limited to 5 consecutive days per leave. All other leave taken, excepting sick leave as per above, shall be unpaid and will be deducted from Employee’s annual salary on a pro-rata basis.
Interested candidates should please provide #1-#3, and #4 if available:
1) A Current Portfolio, with particular focus on AutoCad drafting, 3D Modeling, and Adobe Suite Work
2) A Current Resume
3) A Cover Letter demonstrating your familiarity with the firm's work
4) A Letter of Recommendation
