Thomas Intern: Digital Projects Metadata Specialist

POSITION INFORMATION: 

Program Information 

The Digital Library Services (DLS) unit is the center for production and dissemination of digitized holdings from the University of Oregon, the UO Libraries, and state and regional partners. As part of this mission, DLS and other UO Libraries staff operate the Oregon Digital platform alongside partner-institution Oregon State University, making scholarly and collections available to users in Oregon and around the world.

 

Job Duties 

Create and record descriptive and other metadata for scholarly digital assets, including performing research and identifying and documenting best practices for recording metadata in relevant knowledge domains

Manage metadata versioning and storage and perform manual and/or automated metadata validation prior to ingest into the Oregon Digital platform

Perform batch ingest and quality assurance for digital assets and metadata in Oregon Digital

Troubleshoot technical workflows and communicate with supervisor and the Oregon Digital team as needed to facilitate proper ingest and display of digital assets and metadata

Contribute to other metadata management workflows such as data modelling and entity management as needed depending on operational needs

 

Minimum Qualifications

Current graduate or undergraduate enrollment in an accredited educational institution for the duration of the internship (2026-2027 academic year)

Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work independently, solve complex problems, ask for support when needed, and give and receive feedback

Strong proficiency in using computer applications with a graphical user interface, such as spreadsheet applications and internet browsers

Experience performing, troubleshooting, and documenting detailed and/or technical workflows

 

Preferred Qualifications

Current resident of Oregon

Current enrollment in an ALA-accredited graduate program for Library and Information Science

Experience creating descriptive metadata for library resources

Familiarity with standards and models for library metadata, such as the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Terms and Resource Description Framework (RDF)

Demonstrated experience using command-line applications and programming languages such as Python or Ruby

 

Scheduling Information

Position will be ten hours per week during each term of the 2026-2027 academic year, not including academic breaks or summer term 2027. The employee will need to coordinate training with supervisor at beginning of employment period, but following this may perform work flexibly within designated hours. For a successful candidate living in Eugene, OR work will be a combination of onsite and optional remote work. For a successful candidate elsewhere, work will be fully remote.

 

Appointment Information

Position begins 2026-09-29 and ends no later than 2027-06-11.
